Source: Knicks forward Wilcox to Pistons

Chris Wilcox is close to an agreement on a two-year contract with the Detroit Pistons, a source close to the free-agent forward told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday.
It could be until the middle of the week that a formal announcement is made, but Detroit rivals have ended their pursuit of Wilcox.
“We’ve been told he’s going to [Detroit],” one Western Conference executive confirmed.
Wilcox, a 6-foot-10 power forward, will join free agents Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon on a remade Pistons roster. Detroit had been pursued by Utah for a Carlos Boozer-Tayshaun Prince deal, but Pistons president Joe Dumars decided against it, sources said. Detroit hasn’t been inclined to give Boozer a contract extension – besides still deeply valuing Prince. Detroit also had considered signing forward Drew Gooden, who is still available on the market.

Wilcox, 26, finished last season with the New York Knicks, after a mid-season trade from Oklahoma City. He’s averaged 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds for his career. He was originally drafted with the eighth pick of the 2002 draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, where he played until traded to Seattle in 2006.

The Detroit Pistons have agreed to a two-year deal with free agent Chris Wilcox, a source told ESPN.com.

The deal is for $6 million over the next two years according to sources.

Wilcox was signed as a replacement for Antonio McDyess, who left the team via free agency to sign with the Spurs.

Wilcox is an athletic big who, at 26, still has some upside. However, he's coming off one of the worst seasons of his career.

The previous three years, Wilcox averaged a little more than 13 points, but his numbers dipped to 7.2 per game last season in time split between the Thunder and Knicks.

The Pistons are hoping Wilcox can provide some scoring and athleticism off the bench behind another free agent signing, Charlie Villanueva.

Chad Ford covers the NBA for ESPN Insider.

Ah, sarcasm isn't lost on you at all. Why would a Spurs fan dream of such a thing? Nightmare's more like it.

There goes our last chance at a decent center. I guess we'll have to get it through a trade.

I like the pick-up all things considered, for the price of the contract.

He's not great. He's an underachiever and has a low basketball IQ. He's not really a center.

But before signing him, Kwame Brown was the one and only center on the roster.

    I'll take it.

I would prefer a center with size that can play D to accomodate for Dirk's defensive shortcomings.

But WHO I ask you WHO is out there!

Fortunately aint my job to find out

Wilcox is undersized for center spot so signing him would only be a move upgrading our bench, since we have already got Dirk and Marion rotating around this position.

Charlie V, Ben Gordon, Wilcox...not exactly a defensive minded unit.

Sounds like Steve Kerr during the 1997 Chicago Championship Parade.

Most likely the Mavericks will stick with Erick Dampier and Ryan Hollins...it's because Mark Cuban sucks...

If I am the Mavs I would go after Kaman or Camby ...if healthy he has decent post moves isnt a grea athlet but no0t a stiff either he also played on German team with Dirk in Olympics PREFECT fit besides kidd could set him up well ...give damps expiring ..
Lineup = PG Kidd SG Howard SF Marion PF Dirk C Kaman Old yes, but 2 years ago that is 4 all-stars and one of the most promising NBA big men ...

For Clips they save money long-term and have a back up center who expires following year ...
PG Davis SG Gordon SF Thorton PF BlakeG C Camby that team would be dangerous especially in transition in halfcout pnr davis and Griffin double screens for Gordon...defensively they arent very good and they would have no proven post game but hey it's thr Clips ...
