    (2) Ever heard of the Pangaea Theory?

    http://library.thinkquest.org/17701/high/pangaea/

The Pangaea theory is one that states that all present continents were once together and collectively known as a 'supercontinent' called a Pangaea. The word 'Pangaea' means 'all lands' in Greek, accurately defining the way the continents were 200 millions years ago before it split up. These split-up pieces drifted slowly apart and became the way they are today. Even until now, the shape of the Earth surface is still changing, and it will be forever, as long as the mantle underneath the Earth's crust gets heated and convection currents in the magma keeps dragging the plates.

The Pangaea theory was treated with much skepticsm when it was first raised. But since then, there have been much evidence to support this theory.

Hah! Way for me to pwn myself with the wrong word talking about dumb Americans

I blame it on three hours of sleep last night. Go Joe!

And my point was that people DIDN'T know about the Pangaea theory

"Pangea" being a theory, I don't see any relation to what belief and intelligence.

AND - I certainly don't believe that 42% of Americans have heard of, and believe in Pangea - I'm pretty sure 43% don't know who the current VP is!

Also, the question should have either been "(North and/or South) America", or "The Americas" -

I used to take alarm at these "OMG Americans are so stupid" polls, until I saw polls in other developed countries which indicate their people aren't any smarter.

And the Pangaea theory is hardly common knowledge.

I thought it was. We discussed it in 7th grade earth sciences way back in the day. We even had a project of taking the cut out continents and trying to find how they fit together.

Sheesh. I keep finding more and more stuff that I covered in school that is apparently not common knowledge...

Yes, the formatting sucks. I wish we had better formatting options.

Anyway, I agree with 101A. Being a theory, it's incorrect to assume intelligence of someone or lack of for their belief on the subject. Now if we had orbiting satellites recording it say one frame every 10,000 years, that would be cool, and we could see it!

Yes, I believe the land masses have moved. I believe they were connected. That still doesn't make it true. I could be wrong.

While a theory, mostly because of the impossibility of proving something that happened before we were intelligent enough to record data, it is a theory that's not really in contention. Other than fringe elements who try to involve the sunken continents of Atlantis or Lemuria (or Mu, or any of those others), I can't think of anyone of note to disagree with Pangea.

You'd think at the very least Pangea would be more accepted than Evolution, but the numbers are about the same (although Evolution has far more "no way" people).

I agree with what you say, but how many people study the sciences to that degree? Education and intelligence are not the same either. Not quite the same, but makes me think of a quote attributed to Mark Twain:
I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.

Seriously? I think I learned it in second or third grade. Anybody with cable has to have seen it on Discovery when Survivor and American Idol weren't on.

all the evidence points to it... but unless we get in a time machine or some aliens took a polaroid of it millions of years ago and show us... it'll remain a theory.

The crusts all departed from the same entire continent and the Human beings also share the common ancestors, believed to be chimpanzees. It may hurt our pride of being unique and outstanding but the scientists just insist on their researches, though most of the researches were operated on the basis of American technologies.

The supercontinents have been forming and breaking up throughout a lot of the Earth's existence. Here's another one, called Rodinia, that is thought by some to have caused a nasty ice age that almost killed off all life on the planet due to its blockage of ocean currents at la udes far from the equator (or so the hypothesis goes). Supposedly Panama's separation of the Atlantic and Pacific is going to eventually bring us another ice age in a few thousand years.

This is satanist! This theory says over billions of years this occurred. God created the world in 7 days and we are just over the 5000 year mark. Everyone knows this. Why post this drivel! It's Full of lies!
I'm not familiar with your sarcasm extent, but anyone who studied the Torah knows the Earth was molded is six time periods. Not created. Not days. Translation of the Torah could include that an advanced alien culture terraformed the Earth.

Don't trust any English translation of the Bible. It is corrupted by man.

I really do not want to get into a debate about evolution but what you stated is completely incorrect. Chimps and humans shared a common ancestor at some point, but humans did not evolve from chimps.
