Carter Will Be Magic's Go-To Scorer

Who will take Hedo Turkoglu's role as an inbounds passer and other items from Stan Van Gundy's coaching clinic
    by Josh Robbins

Stan Van Gundy found an interesting way to spend one of his last open Saturdays before the beginning of the grind of training camp, the preseason and the 2009-10 NBA regular season.

Van Gundy spent Saturday leading an eight-hour clinic for high-school and college coaches at Lake Mary Prep. All proceeds went to the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches and to the school.

A story about the clinic ran in today’s Orlando Sentinel. Though most of the eight hours were dedicated to X’s and O’s and his coaching philosophy, there were some moments in which he touched on the Magic, either as he responded to audience questions or to my questions after the clinic ended. Here goes:

    * Who will inbound the ball in late-game situations?

Van Gundy told the group of about 75 coaches that one of the ways the Magic will miss Hedo Turkoglu most is as an inbounds passer in games’ closing moments. We all remember Turk’s perfect alley-oop inbounds pass to Dwight Howard with 0.8 seconds remaining to beat San Antonio a couple of seasons ago and Turk’s alley-oop inbounds pass to Courtney Lee in Game 2 of the NBA Finals this past June. But beyond those plays, Van Gundy said Turkoglu is an ideal inbounder because he’s 6 feet 10 and can see over a defender and because Turk processes the different options quickly.

Van Gundy said he and his coaches have talked this summer about who will replace Turkoglu in those situations. Vince Carter could do it, but Van Gundy said he wants Carter on the floor, where the team can take advantage of Carter’s scoring abilities.

It looks like the role will go to free-agent acquisition Matt Barnes. Van Gundy regards Barnes as an excellent passer, and here’s what Van Gundy said:

“[Mickael] Pietrus ought to be good in that position, but I think Matt Barnes will end up being the guy in that situation, but I haven’t really seen him. But that’s a key thing, because if you’re gonna run something, you have three or four different options. This guy [the inbounder] is going to really make a play. There’s so many times in those situations, whether it’s our team or teams I’m watching, that you can run the film back and see the coach drew up a great play and there’s a guy open, but they didn’t make the play to the right guy. So that inbounder is the most important guy.”

    * How will Vince Carter’s addition impact the Magic?

One of the coaches asked Van Gundy this question, and Van Gundy indicated that he’ll run pick-and-rolls with Carter, like he did with Turkoglu. But Van Gundy also said he’ll run more isolations and post-ups because that plays to Carter’s strengths.

"My guess going into the season is that at the end of the game, he's the guy you go to most of the time because of his ability to create a shot either for himself or for the team," Van Gundy said.

    * How is Jameer Nelson doing as he continues his comeback from last season’s shoulder injury?

Van Gundy said Nelson has been working out at RDV Sportsplex for the last two weeks and is looking "great."

If the Magic really plan on having Matt Bricks inbounding the ball at the end of the game, good luck to them.

Makes sense. Carter is like Audie Custer....It's his last stand. His moment in the sun. His seminal moment.

    I'm hip to it.

A fadeaway jumper by Carter is not the shot the Magic should be looking for in crunchtime, but that is what they will live and die with, apparently.

Carter should be the Magic's go to scorer. I was shocked at how weak Dwight howard's post game was when I saw him in the finals. He's not even as strong as he looks because the guy was consistently getting stripped and blocked. Dwight really needs to step up his post game if he wants to be a great center in this league. Nuff said.

his game is based on pure athleticism. just like shaq's is on sheer size. not much actual talent in either of them. their careers got made, celebrity and tens of millions of dollars because.........their bodies grew more than other peoples did.
