On a sca;e of from 1-10, how would you rate the overall defensive ability (1-on-1 and team defense) of the following Spurs and Spurs wanna-bes:

    DUNCAN 8
    McDYESS 7
    RATLIFF 8
    MAHINMI 7
    BONNER 5
    BLAIR 7
    HAISLIP 6
    JEFFERSON 7
    GINOBILI 7
    FINLEY 5
    MASON 5
    PARKER 7
    HILL 8

    WILLIAMS 6
    HAIRSTON 7
    GIST 7

Granted some of theses player have limited or no NBA experience but their rating reflects what I think they could do defensively if yjey did make the team and have time to develop.

I'm not sure Ian is a 7 quite yet. he can block shots, but he sometimes makes mistakes in small things such as boxing out. Blair works hard on defense, but he got into foul trouble in college and reaches sometimes. Mason can be good when his shots are falling.
I understand your point.. its really more a gut feel about the potential a player can achieve in the Spurs system. You gave Ian a 5 w/c is appropriate for the reasons you cited.. I placed him higer because I think with good coaching and mptivation coupled with his athleticism and quickness, he can achieve much more..
