So, I'm getting an unlocked Iphone 3G.....

The price of the unlocked Iphone 3G has dropped since the 3GS was released.
With my current contract with FIdo (Canada), I'm not eligible yet for a contract Iphone; in fact I would have to wait for 1 year.

I was going to get an unlocked a Nokia E71, which is still a great phone, but the Iphone UI is so easy..... so I just changed my mind.

So far, I have 2 questions:

1. my current carrier (FIDO) is one of the 2 Iphone providers in Canada; is there a way to put the 3.0 OS on my Iphone without having it locked back by Fido?
Would I have to jailbreak it?
Has the Development Team adressed the issue?

2. since the phone is unlocked, can I use my MP3's as ringtones ?

What happens if I download a recent app without installing OS 3.0 beforehand

Will that lock me back as well

You would have to install 3.0 and unlock it. What development team issue?

You can use MP3's as ringtones without unlocking and or jailbreaking the phone.

If for some reason you try to use an app that requires 3.0 and you don't have it, it won't work.

Yes upgrading to 3.0 will lock it, you have to make sure that whatever you update to is unlockable. 3.0 should be the newest and it is unlockable.

The data plan has nothing to do with the phone being locked or unlocked.

- I have the latest version of Facebook, and I can't access the groups

- Skype (1.1) doesn't work: it closes as soon as I open it.

current version of facebook does not support groups. when an app is .99 cents and you are going to use it just pay for it. Installous version of skype will crash, uinstall it and pay the damn .99 cents. and then install the 3g hack so you can use it over 3g as well as wifi/

Skype: i just downloaded the previous version from Installous; works like a charm.

And it works great over wifi for free without Hack

Doesn't matter anyway I paid for my skype as I do any apps that I think are worth a damn after Ive downloaded them from installous.

And apparently, since Wednesday, you can use Skype with 3G in the U.S without Hack

The new version is not out, they have just been given permission to release a version that uses 3g.
