Someone in another thread pointed out that if you had a taller front line than the suns, you feast on them. LA and Orlando (and probably Portland soon), all have this. Who could they possibly go after in a trade to help this in order to compete with the better teams?

For a cheap price they could probably get Kurt Thomas. He doesn't help a lot but he's a proven post defender who can give 20 solid minutes while setting great screens for Nash.

The first name that comes to mind is Marcus Camby. I think he'd compliment Amare's game better than Channing Frye.

I have no idea what the likelihood of getting him is, though.

He'd compliment Amare better than Frye but he's also got no way of defending bulk (I don't see him doing much to limit Bynum or Howard).

Ben Wallace is averaging 9.3 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1.4 steals a game in just under 30 mpg. He's not taking any shots but shooting at 65% when he does. He's shown the ability to move up and down the court well and still has the strength to defend the bigger big men in the league.

If only the Suns could some how acquire Ben Wallace, they'd be set...

We've seen what happens when Nash and Amare have to play with a center who can't draw a defender out of the paint. The only reason their pick and role has been so effective this year is because the other team's center is leaving Channing Frye open every time he goes to help.

The possibility of getting a real big ended when they bought out Ben Wallace. They could have traded that huge expiring contract for Tyson Chandler or held onto it for a bettter offer. They chose to reduce payroll.

Tyson Chandler would have been horrible on this team. He and Amare have hated each other since high school.

I dont care. If they didnt like that offer, they could have held on to Wallace until a better one came along. Especially with the big summer ahead of us.

Buying out Wallace wasn't the problem. My main issue was getting rid of Pavlovic's expiring contract where most of the money was non-guaranteed. That could have done something for the team.

Do you really think a guy like Tyson Chandler or Emeka Okafor would improve the Suns THAT much when the downside of it is either one of their contracts make it so the Suns have no spending flexibility whatsoever for 2-3 years?

Kurt Thomas is too old to play more than 15mpg. And he can still defend the post, but that's all - he doesn't have the quickness to guard the roll game nor to cover perimeter oriented bigs.

    Marcin Gortat.

ETA: I don't think the Suns are one solid big away from being contenders. They lack a lot more.

What do the Suns have to trade anyway? Do they have a trade exception or something?

I don't know what his longterm injury status is, but Tony Battie might be a guy they could target. He makes $6.2 million though, so what would the Suns have to trade for him? If he gets healthy, he's a 6'11 guy capable of making some midrange jumpers and will play decent defense. He is older at 33, but he could fill a role not unlike Steven Hunter did for the Suns a few years ago.

But I go back to what do the Suns have to trade for anyone?

I'd like Gortat, but the Suns don't have anything of significance to offer up.

Maybe Tucker/Clark/Lopez? Tucker for expiring, Lopez for the backup and Clark for the bait? I don't really want to give up on Clark, though.

    Gortat/Re for Barbosa/Lopez/Tucker works.

Doesn't really clear much salary for Orlando, however.

Nelson is out 6 weeks with a torn meniscus (surgery). Maybe this can convince Orlando to deal Gortat sooner than they thought.

What would they need? 1) Wing defender. 2) quality backup point-guard (doesn't need to be a true PG, Barbosa would do) 3) a 4th big to replace Gortat (at least able to rebound). They probably wouldn't mind a pick either.

I think some team could offer more than the Suns.
