    Here is the scenario:

A player catches the ball and has not taken a dribble yet. He jumps in the air either trying to make a pass or shot but in mid air changes his mind and proceeds to put the ball on the ground while he is in mid air and start dribbling. Is this traveling?

I think I saw Jason Kidd do this a few days ago and he was called for traveling, but I was questioning whether the call was valid or not.

Larry Bird used to get away with that.

I personally don't think it's a travel based on the rules, but basically every time I've seen anything like that, it's been called a travel (except for Bird). It does look weird.
