CDR Calls Out Nets After Record-Setting Loss: ‘We Don’t Have Any Heart’

How does it feel to play on the first NBA team to lose its first 18 games of the season? Chris Douglas-Roberts didn’t hesitate to vent to Sporting News’ Bill Eichenberger and other reporters after the Nets set that record on Wednesday. CDR went all out with 24 points in 40 minutes, but that wasn’t enough to offset an embarrassing 117-101 loss to the Mavericks.
Question: After such a lackluster effort, do you feel like you are any closer to ending the streak?
Chris Douglas-Roberts: At this point, I feel like the streak is definitely getting the best of us. It’s really starting to get to us now. So when a team goes on a run, it’s almost like we give up. It’s really unfortunate. But that’s what it looks like to me.
Q: How do you turn that around?
CDR: First, we have to believe we can win. It’s us first before we even get to the other team.
Q: This is obviously new for you, coming from such a successful college program as Memphis. Have you asked for advice from other guys who experienced this kind of thing?
CDR: Yeah. It seems like everybody I talk to, I really just get angrier. It’s the same thing. "Keep your head in it, keep playing. Whatever you do, stay focused." I’m really just tired of hearing that, honestly.
Q: Is there any hope that you go into practice tomorrow, Kiki Vandeweghe, a new coach, is there and maybe there is a different kind of energy?
CDR: It’s not the coach. Red Auerbach couldn’t coach us the way we are playing. It’s us. It doesn’t matter who you bring in. It starts in here. You have to have heart. You have to have the heart to overcome something like this.
Q: How frustrated are you?
CDR: It’s simple. We’re the only team without a win. OK, there are other teams that aren’t good teams, but they are winning some games. Even Minnesota beat Denver the other night.
Q: What did you talk about in here at halftime after giving up 49 points in the second quarter?
CDR: We said we don’t have any heart. It’s like we are laying down. It’s a sign of weakness. In a minute, if not already, teams are going to be coming in here saying, "Oh, we’ve got the Nets. All you have to do is come out, punch them in the mouth, then they give up and go home with their tail between their legs."
Q: Do you have this kind of tough talk with your teammates? And if not, do you have any intention of going out of your way to talk to guys to try to get this streak stopped?
CDR: I’ve been thinking about that. But it’s like, how far can I really go? I feel like if I do do that, my emotions will take over, and I want to be the solution. I don’t want guys to look at me as a problem. The smart thing is to keep it cordial and keep it calm, but that is not working.
Q: Does that mean you guys need to get angry with each other?
CDR: I’ve been saying that. But a lot of people have been taking it that I’m some sort of thug. It’s not that. It’s between the lines. … Heart and toughness won’t let you lay down when a team makes a run. But people here take it the wrong way. We have to be a tougher team. It’s very simple.
