The number of federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded during the recession, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal salary data.

Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months — and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted.

Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time — in pay and hiring — during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector.

The highest-paid federal employees are doing best of all on salary increases. Defense Department civilian employees earning $150,000 or more increased from 1,868 in December 2007 to 10,100 in June 2009, the most recent figure available.

When the recession started, the Transportation Department had only one person earning a salary of $170,000 or more. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees had salaries above $170,000.

The trend to six-figure salaries is occurring throughout the federal government, in agencies big and small, high-tech and low-tech. The primary cause: substantial pay raises and new salary rules.

"There's no way to justify this to the American people. It's ridiculous," says Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a first-term lawmaker who is on the House's federal workforce subcommittee.

Jessica Klement, government affairs director for the Federal Managers Association, says the federal workforce is highly paid because the government employs skilled people such as scientists, physicians and lawyers. She says federal employees make 26% less than private workers for comparable jobs.

USA TODAY analyzed the Office of Personnel Management's database that tracks salaries of more than 2 million federal workers. Excluded from OPM's data: the White House, Congress, the Postal Service, intelligence agencies and uniformed military personnel.

The growth in six-figure salaries has pushed the average federal worker's pay to $71,206, compared with $40,331 in the private sector.

Key reasons for the boom in six-figure salaries:

•Pay hikes. Then-president Bush recommended — and Congress approved — across-the-board raises of 3% in January 2008 and 3.9% in January 2009. President Obama has recommended 2% pay raises in January 2010, the smallest since 1975. Most federal workers also get longevity pay hikes — called steps — that average 1.5% per year.

•New pay system. Congress created a new National Security Personnel System for the Defense Department to reward merit, in addition to the across-the-board increases. The merit raises, which started in January 2008, were larger than expected and rewarded high-ranking employees. In October, Congress voted to end the new pay scale by 2012.

•Pay caps eased. Many top civil servants are prohibited from making more than an agency's leader. But if Congress lifts the boss' salary, others get raises, too. When the Federal Aviation Administration chief's salary rose, nearly 1,700 employees' had their salaries lifted above $170,000, too.

We are being duped. Obama is a ing tragedy, not that I expected less, really, but I didnt expect him to be the polar opposite of Campaign Obama.

Seriously, we are all ed majorly. Hope you enjoy what little income you have left after these ing guys are through with you.

-HealthCare: Inevitable and neutered from original intent to become just a bloated Ponzi scheme.

-(De)Regulation: Let me get this straight, Congress is going to form a new Committee that has the power to bail out ailing companies deemed TBTF. Ladies and gentlemen, we are now subsidizing rich people's mistakes by way of Cons utional authority.

-Transparent Government: This one I never believed, so no surprise.

-Unemployment: Beyond extending unemployment benefits, unless a President made it his single most important agenda, these isnt much an unfocused President can do. Neutral on this.

If there is any American out there with the illusion that you matter one iota, let this administration remind you of the truth. You do not matter and your partisan alliance means less than zero on the national stage. Democrat or Republican? HA! More like Extremely Wealthy or Not.

There is your order of importance. Do you make more than $2 million a year? No? Then kindly never open your dumb, poor mouth again, thankyougoodday.

I usually refrain from using the word hate in its literal sense, but I so hate my government. There arent really words to express how much I mean that.

I guess I should concentrate my job search on government jobs - that seems to be one of the few sectors that is growing.

Because they didn't read the entire article:

Govt hiring and jobs outstripped manufacturing hiring and jobs...almost 30 yrs ago.

Wasn't difficult to figure out what the result would be.

someone explain to me why obama is being crucified over this article.
Because they didn't read the entire article:
No, because Obama was supposed to be different, at least, thats what he was elected to be.

But it turns out as ty or even tier yet that he is infact just another figurehead passing through the top chair of government on behalf of corporate government bent on expanding its influence into every facet of your life.

There will come a time where nothing can be had without government involvement. Obama was Change, Obama was Hope...Obama is a ing lying piece of .

At least with Bush you knew what you were getting. He was a daddy's boy, aw-shucks, Yale brat whose family is made and played in oil money. Thats why I never voted for him, he was very honest about the fact that he was and planned on being a corporate shill who will err on the side of multi-national companies in every case presented to his office.

Obama, knowing the snetiment of the nation about big business and Wall Street, fed off that angst and anger, ran on a platform counter to the prevailing Republican government that oversaw the largest deregulation of the market in almost 50 years, and won quite handily on that platform.

A platform that included, off the top of my head,

Transparency in Government: this deserves another

HealthCare Reform: This isnt funny, really. What he promised and what will become law are two very different, even polar opposite en ies.

Regulation of "Wall Street": Yeah ing right. He is literally empowering Wall Street to cut even further into taxpayer dollars the moment a TBTF even remotely looks like it might fail. This power requires a Cons utional amendment...word on the street is, this amendment will pass. Think. About. That. This...abomination ranks right up there, maybe even supercedes, the Federal Reserve Act penned by Woodrow Wilson. Its the blatant hijacking of national financial solvency by the corporatists whose ends are better served by a debt-ridden United States. Treasonous, no other word for it.

To be honest, I dont give two s about HealthCare. I once read something that went something like:

"I am not saying being dumb is a crime punishable by death, but I am saying we should remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out."

Transparency in government...meh, that was more of a preference to me, but there are arguments for and against. Like I said, meh...

But this TBTF Committee has me ing seething, raging pissed off. Its ing treason, plain and simple. He, his predecessor and his Congressional -heads are giving away taxpayer money like candy already. Seeing as this practice is wildly unpopular and might affect a politicians ability to get re-elected, these pansies are doing the exact same, idiotic, treasonous thing their predecessors did with monetary policy.

Just...giving it away. They are basically saying, in so many words,

"Look, private companies of a certain scale cannot be allowed to fail, ever. The US Government can, is and will continue to subsidize those companies deemed to be too big to fail. This is a politically sensitive issue that has far ranging electoral implications, implications members of Congress do not want to be subject to. So we are deferring this power to subsidize to someone else. An extra-legal Committee that everyone can blame, including Congress, that will be composed of appointed stooges who will routinely be villified on CSPAN via Senate Hearing Committees and fiery brand political pundits of all political colors. But this new Committee will never be repealed once installed, will never, ever work on behalf of everyday Americans, will routinely be abused by corporate government and will ultimately be a direct line of credit for risk-taking billionaires to never lose a penny of their money, only the nation's....which isnt important, in case you couldnt tell by Washington's spending habits over the course of the last, ohhhh, 70 years. We dont really care about this country and we certainly dont give a flying about you. You are only a death tax away from being useful to those who actually matter, our contributors. Thank you and have nice, short life."
