Bucks G Jennings fined for Twitter post
Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings has been fined $7,500 for posting a message on his Twitter account after Milwaukee’s 108-101 double overtime win over Portland last weekend.
Jennings was fined for the timing of his post, not the content when he tweeted: “Back to 500. Yess!!! “500” means where doing good. Way to Play Hard Guys.”
The fine was announced Friday before the Bucks played at Cleveland.
According to the NBA’s social media policy, players cannot tweet during game time, defined as beginning 45 minutes before the game starts and ending after players have finished talking to the media following the game.
The message has been removed from Jennings’ account.

The NBA has to protect its profits/sponsors/advertisers/etc.
It sounds like tyranny but I can understand where the NBA is coming from.
There would be massive league problems if viewers tuned into Twitter instead of TNT/AP/ESPN,etc for post-game information.

Brandon Jennings was one of the NBA’s early adopters of Twitter—actually, he wasn’t even in the NBA yet when he picked up the habit. But he’s also been the player most adversely affected by social media thus far, which at the time led to a cease-and-desist on his activities. Since then, Jennings has returned to the scene and is reliably one of the NBA’s more entertaining web presences.
Now, Jennings is in Twitter-related trouble again, having violated the league’s policy about tweeting during games over the weekend. After a double-OT win over Portland, Jennings shared the following with his fans: "Back to 500. Yess!!! "500" means where doing good. Way to Play Hard Guys."
Obviously, this wasn’t written during the game, or else he wouldn’t have known the outcome. However, for the purposes of this rule, the game starts 45 minutes before it starts and ends 45 minutes after it ends. Thus, Jennings was fined $7500. Today, he was understandably irritated: "I understand I got fined, but 7500? For being happy over a win, you would of thought I said something bad. I mean it was a big win for us."
Rules are rules, put away the computer and talk to real reporters, and all that good stuff. Honestly, that window of time thing is stupid. Before the game, sure, no one wants someone screwing around when he should be getting his game face on and consuming fast food. But after? Given how little some fans care about the quotes given to reporters, and how many prefer the instant and direct access of player Twitters, why exactly is it a bad thing for Jennings to take a few seconds and reach out to them? Isn’t that called forward-thinking public relations?
Update: Jennings now says he’s leaving Twitter again.
