Pat Robertson says Haiti paying for 'pact to the devil'
Pat Robertson, the evangelical Christian who once suggested God was punishing Americans with Hurricane Katrina, says a "pact to the devil" brought on the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
Officials fear more than 100,000 people have died as a result of Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti.
Robertson, the host of the "700 Club," blamed the tragedy on something that "happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it."
The Haitians "were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever," Robertson said on his broadcast Wednesday. "And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.' True story. And so, the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.' "
Native Haitians defeated French colonists in 1804 and declared independence.
"You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other." Robertson has previously linked natural disasters and terrorist attacks to legalized abortion in the United States. Soon after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, killing more than 1,800 and wreaking unprecedented devastation on New Orleans, Louisiana, Robertson weighed in with his own theory.
"We have killed over 40 million unborn babies in America," Robertson said on his September 12, 2005, broadcast of "700 Club."
"I was reading, yesterday, a book that was very interesting about what God has to say in the Old Testament about those who shed innocent blood. And he [the author] used the term that those who do this, 'the land will vomit you out.' ... But have we found we are unable somehow to defend ourselves against some of the attacks that are coming against us, either by terrorists or now by natural disaster? Could they be connected in some way?"
This reminds me of the explanation for Hurricane Katrina.
This kind of comment is so pathetic it doesn't even merit response. It is simply embarrassing to all of us.
i guess plate tectonics takes a back seat to deals with the devil.
No, no. You see, plate tectonics are a myth; vulcanism and earthquakes are merely Satan's way of reminding the world of his presence and are the means for making those who are beholden to him accountable.
Pangea my ass.
Plate Tectonics are merely the Devil's turntables.
The God of the bible is a prick, so I wouldn't put it past him.
Someone get a muzzle on this guy.
so what is pat robertson a punishment for?
why wouldn't God kills tens of thousands of presumably innocent persons via natural disaters for some pact a handful of haitian rebels made (if you believe the story) with the devil 200 plus years ago. sounds completely reasonable, rational, and loving.
btw--isn't this the type of moral justification a middle eastern cleric might make for a terrorist attack against, say, two large buildings in NYC? you, know--the sins of the father being visited upon the sons. or as Brother Malcolm would say, the chickens have come home to roost.
so the twin towers were full of satanists? who knew!
What an epic fail by Pat Robertson. Not shocking or surprising coming from him. I would say that this earthquake is probably a wake up call. Something should have been done to Haiti a long time. And no, I'm not talking about God destroying or anything. I'm talking about that a massive amount of foreign aid that should have been sent to that country a long time ago. That country has needed help for years and it took a in earthquake for people to realize that. Bush could have given a butt load of money to Haiti while he was president. I mean he gave a load of money to Africa.
Very cleverly disguised, to summon Churchill (IIRC).
Sadly, I actually expected him to say this.
if the people of Haiti had only made a pact with God instead of the devil to get rid of the French........then this disaster would have been called "a test of faith" instead.
What the does Spock have to do with anything?
You mean they actually had to make a pact with the devil just to defeat the French?
I thought anyone could defeat the French.
They can even beat themselves!
Spock is the devil, according to the Yangs. Of course the Coms don't believe in supers ion...
The Omega Glory
Watch Keith Oberman destroy both Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh over their comments regarding the Haiti earthquake.
Haiti's war for independence started in the 18th Century. Toussaint L'Ouverture repelled the British (1798) and Spanish (1801) in succession, Dessalines repelled the French, and the two made Haiti the second independent republic of the New World on New Year's Day, 1804. The imperial excuse was yellow fever, and it wasn't imaginary.
But Haiti beat three successive invading imperial armies, the most professional of their time. No inconsiderable feat for a fighting force of erstwhile slaves. Leadership no doubt was key, but the French revolution lit a fire in Haiti, too. Add the zeal of the bondsman for his own liberty, and you are there. (Pity there's not more of that now.)
I would assume the deal with the French king is the deal with the devil at issue, as it is the blood money paid by Haiti, in exchange for a formal recognition of independence, for the lost profits on the slave trade. In July 1825, King Charles X of France sent a fleet of fourteen vessels and thousands of troops to reconquer the island. Under pressure, President Boyer agreed to a treaty by which France formally recognized the independence of the nation in exchange for a payment of 150 million francs (the sum was reduced in 1838 to 90 million francs) – an indemnity for profits lost from the slave trade.
(Pat Robertson's reference to Napoleon III was probably ad-libbed. Historically, it makes no sense.)

From the wiki, y'all. The first sentence of my post and a little about Toussaint L'Ouverture, I knew beforehand.
