They were thinking Al Horford > David Lee
I would have selected David Lee as well. But, there are no reserves on either all star team from a team with a losing record, which also gives more logic to Pau Gasol over Kaman. If they include David Lee, there's an argument for Brook Lopez as well. A month or so ago, I would have agreed with Horford. But David Lee has been playing out of his mind, putting up 25+ PPG and 15+ RPG games routinely. It's a shame. I do think he was snubbed this year.
Horford is like 10 times the defender Lee is.
Precisely, and his numbers are that good with better rebounders in the team and better players. David Lee gets his numbers cuz well who else is playing on the crappy knicks?
I thought Horford's teammate, Josh Smith, was a bigger snub. Horford is doing pretty well though.
Horford is a better player than Lee. Lee is a good player, but he's a ty defender and his offensive numbers are inflated due to D'Antoni ball.
Josh Smith clearly deserved it over both, but I'd also take Horford over Lee..
David Lee's usage % is 8% higher than Horford's and his team plays at a higher pace, he's obviously going to put up better numbers than him..his rebounding is better, I'll give him that, but Horford is a significantly better defender..
The Hawks deserve 2 All-Stars more than the Knicks deserve 1 IMO..
Either way, Josh Smith was robbed..
I think most coaches/GMs would rather have Al Horford than David Lee. Lee has better numbers but isn't half the defender Horford is. Brook Lopez is better than either of them. Al Jefferson was overlooked too but isn't back to full form. Wish the Spurs had ANY of them.
I don't keep up with the Timberwolves but I never hear about Big Al in the news anymore like I used to..
I'd want Horford on my team over David Lee because of defense, but I think David Lee probably deserves an all star invite over Horford for their respective performances up to this point in the season. Defense is rarely a compass for all star selections anyway. I'd admit that David Lee's numbers are inflated quite a bit because of the system he plays in, but it's still impressive for him to put up basically 20/11. A 6 point difference in PPG is pretty large.
And his rebounding really isn't a fluke. He doesn't have another dominant rebounder playing alongside him, but he's also grabbing 16-17 rebounds against frontlines like the Lakers and Celtics. He took down 21 rebounds battling against one of the other better rebounders in the league in Joakim Noah (Noah had 21 in the same game though). I think he'd be an elite rebounder even on a different team, in a slower system, playing with better rebounding teammates. He just goes after the ball so hard. And he has shown quite a bit of improvement offensively, adding a more consistent midrange jumper and some ability in the post.
I think the clincher is the losing record the Knicks have, not the difference in defense. If they were even .500, I think Lee could have taken that spot over Horford. Still not a very good defender, but from the games I've seen Lee play, he's really improved his overall game and his production is not ONLY dependent on the style of play the Knicks employ.
I understand Horford over Lee, especially because of team record. I even like Horford as a player more. But, I personally would select Lee over Horford as an all star for this season.
Yeah, guess I shouldn't have mentioned him since we are talking Eastern bigs here. Al came to mind because he is on one of my fantasy teams (which was a mistake - should have grabbed Zach Randolph. He is definitely All Star worthy this year).

seriously. d'antoni ball is great for stats. i personally think that the coaches voted in horford for size so that they match up better against the west. last year the east was tiny
your team should have to be over .500 to make the game.
Nuff said.
That's not true at all with the All-Star reserves. Voters? Sure. Most coaches definitely factor in defense when selecting.
if either in west they wouldn't have sniffed the all star game
it's a shame that Josh Smith did not chosen, he deserved it more than Horford and even more than Rose.
Horford got in as a center.
So did Pau Gasol and he isn't really a Center. They could have put Smith in there and just listed Bosh as the Center or something.
Pau plays back up center. So shut the up and stop crying Chris Kaman.
Horford is a center.
And Pau isn't. So why couldn't the East do the same the West did and put the more deserving player in Josh Smith even though he isn't technically a Center?
I agree, Chris Kaman doesn't deserve it. Pau is far and away the better player, on the better team.
Couldn't agree more. They got the wrong front court Hawk player going. Josh Smith changed his game for the better of the team.. no more is he throwing up a three. He should of gone. Biggest snub this year IMO.
