Lottery chances would be better than chances of beating LA...I would feel horrible seeing this team swept out of the first round at the hands of Kobe and Colonel Sanders...
This was probably thrown out there by some other posters , so apologies--in advance...
I think the way things have gone it would be best to face the Lakers first...a series win would be unexpected by the whole world so the spurs would not have much pressure...
Tim, Tony & Manu would not have an extra series or two of wear and tear and the FOCUS would be there from start to finish...
win a game or two and the confidence would skyrocket...win the series, as improbable as it looks like....and this team could salvage a lost season--no matter how far they would continue--beating the lakers would at least ease a lot of the frustrations of this season...

#6 is the lowest a team has finished and went on the win it all... that should say something. also there is only once that the #8 spot beat the #1. the odds will be against us.
As it concerns beating the lakers, I just don't see it happening the way we play right now.
That's the worst thing that can happen. The Spurs don't get a lottery pick and they have a built-in excuse for failure in the playoffs. "Well we would have beaten three or four of those other teams, but nobody was beating the Lakers."
Happened twice.
well, i hate to be negative...but i was not saying the spurs would beat the lakers AND then go on and win it all...i guess i meant---since it appears that the spurs are NOT going far....then it would be best to play the lakers FIRST...because it would almost be a win-win situation....
beat the lakers...great...
lose to the lakers...well no-one else would have beat them anyway...
so at least FACE the lakers and go for broke.....FTL!
Again, that's the worst conceivable situation for the Spurs. They don't get a lottery pick to salvage this terrible year and they have a built-in excuse for losing in the playoffs and don't have to face this season full of potential an championship aspirations that they ed up so badly.
why in the world would you want the Lakers to assrape the Spurs for 4 games in a row and have an average margin of victory of 30+ pts????
And then not get a lottery pick on top of it...that would be the absolute WORST case scenario...
Oh yeah having to put up with an entire offseason of championship-drunk Laker fans would be bad too.![]()
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh no, better off missing the playoffs than that there. Atleast you get a lottery pick and something to look forward to sides a summer long rant from LA fans on how they beat us again.
I think it's happened 3 times:
1994 Denver d. Seattle
1999 New York d. Miami
2007 Golden State d. Dallas.
That said, it wouldn't seem likely to happen for a 4th time if the Spurs were to face the Lakers in that situation. Even if someone else were to somehow surpass LA and grab the #1 seed in the West, I'm not sure that the Spurs as an 8 seed would be particularly likely to beat them.
how the did I forget the Knicks in '99? Of all the ones for me to forget.

Great idea! The older Spurs would be freshest and the season has been so disappointing anyway, might as well go ahead and face the Lakers early on. And the other good news is that the fellas can start their luxury vacations earlier this year. All around a win-win!
No way is that the Spurs best case scenario.
Sorry to say it Spur fans but it looks like your team is slowly deteriorating, but you guys had the best team of the decade. Remember that.
...but what if they pull off an upset...you are tellin' me that wouldn't be sweet?
What if we got a top 3 pick in the draft next year...wouldn't that be sweet also?
To watch the Lakers assrape the Spurs and not even get a pick out of it. No, thanks, I'll pass...
Spurs cant even beat crappy teams like Detroit or the Pacers (yes they beat them but it could have gone either way) What makes you think that they could magically all of a sudden beat a top tier team such as the Lakers? Don't forget that the Spurs would be playing a top team in playoff mode out there not just walking out on the court all by themselves.
This is even without getting into the odds, which don't favour this scenario as history has shown. If spurs can't get at least in the 6th seed I don't see the point. It would be much wiser to go for the lotto and try again for the future. We did it before and we got TIMMY out of it, so tanking might not be as bad as it might seems.
No way the Spurs finished 8th anyway...as bad as the Spurs are playing right now, teams like the Grizzlies, Blazers, Hornets, and Rockets are even MORE inconsistent than the Spurs and one of those is most likely to finish 8th. The Spurs will be somewhere in the 4th-7th seed range...
2 of those teams made moves to get significantly better before the deadline...I don't see the Spurs finishing ahead of either of them.
Agree. Hoping they get the 8th seed makes no sense. They are not getting past the lakers in any round.
A top 10 lottery pick looks much better for next years chances to rebound.
After the loss to Detroit and Parker missing more time it is becoming more real that the spurs have a chance to not make the playoffs.
Wow! Its already been 15+ years since Mutombo fell to the floor after Denver won as the 8th seed.
The Spurs would probably lose to the Lakers in the 1st rd, but they would compete and not lose by 30+ points a game. Would be an interesting series for sure. As for the Lakers being unbeatable this year, I think the Cavaliers, Magic, and Celtics can beat them in the NBA finals. The Nuggets and Mavericks could also give them a series, won't be easy for them to get the repeat in the 2010 playoffs like people think it will be. Gasol could break down, and Kobe has had problems with injurys this season. Phil is a mastermind coach though...
Have you seen the Spurs this year?..those other teams will give the Lakers some trouble, but the Spurs will get swept and lose every game by 20+..
Playing the Lakers and losing to them in a series would be horrible..knowing their fans, they would somehow turn it in Kobe's favor in arguments vs. Duncan..

8th seed and getting destroyed by the Lakers is the absolute worst case scenario. Rather take my chances with the ping pong balls.
