Didn't any of you Texans look at the cars and RVs when you were getting your wife and tobacco chewing supplies at the auction?
Have you or your clan purchased and was it a success?

Cars at auctions aren't so bad. They'll typically all have over 75k miles though. 70k-75k is the typical cutoff for mileage to qualify them for auction vs. lot sales.
I would never buy an RV through the auction. RV sales...especially used are through the roof right now so they're would have to been some serious underlying conditions for a dealership to want to push an RV through the auctions.
Unless its an auto dealer who took one in on trade and didn't want to sell from their lot. I don't know if you would have access to that type of info upfront though.
Not all Texans buy their wives at auciton. I bought my husband there. He had a sign around his neck that said "skinny nerd from Wyoming seeks fabulous sex and chicken-fried steak". I couldn't resist. So I bought him and then we bought a Crown Victoria PI (police interceptor) at a DPS auction. It had 130k miles and had a banged up bumper, but it still runs and has required relatively little maintenance (although we've had to replace the transmission twice). The frame is built 3 times as heavy as a regular Crown Vic, so it uses a lot of gas, but it also has a very strong, fast motor, an a/c you simply can't beat (the air comes out COLD as soon as you turn it on, even in this heat), and a ginormous trunk. To be honest, I ing hate it because it's ugly and is hard to park in skinny parking spots and because it got handed down to me from my husband who has a cute new Toyota. I complain about it all the time. But for $7000, it was a pretty good investment.
How much advance time and how detailed an exam do they let customers do at the Texas actions you attend?
If you are talking about the big time auctions you have to be a dealer to get in and bid.
Amount of inspection depends on which lane they run in. Top lane you can actually start up and test drive, bottom lane is as is where is.
You can make some decent deals if you are looking for something that is not a "hot" item right now...for instance, you could probably steal a low mile clean Hummer at the auctions right now because they aren't "hot" and GM just announced they are shutting down the line...
The more popular cars get bid up because more dealers want them on their lot. B2B was correct that most BIG dealers keep their low mile clean stuff, but there are still a lot of cars like that at the auctions. Smaller dealers that are buying/selling on floorplans frequently get upside down and have to dump good units to square up. It's just part of the game.
Personally, I have found my best deals on the last two vehicles I bought on Craigslist and e-Bay.
The dealer only actions here (San Diego), the dealers refuse to tell me what their cut is. Instead they play that game of "tell me what car it is you want, and how much you are willing to spend."
Okay, done and done. I ask "Now you tell me what is your cut". Pussasses refuse to answer. Also when i ask if the car is guaranteed. After much babble i get out of them that the car is guaranteed to them, the direct buyer but not me, they guy who pays for the freakin car. I won't deal with them.
As to public auctions, there are only a couple here. That jackassed outfit Manheim is one of them, but those ' s want a non refundable $200 to attend. Again, i wont do it. So I'm down to one and one only public auction that does not charge to get in. But they have only a one hour pre viewing and afterwords only a 24 hour guarantee. And that guarantee is only that their auction mechanics will *fix* whatever is wrong. Well newsflash
a. My mech cannot always do a preinspection buy within 24 hours. Sometimes he needs a day or two, or three. And they are telling me the guarantee expires after 24 hours. Please.
Craigslist used car ads here are chuck full of auction re s who jack the price up. I'll pay a guy for going to the auction and buying a car and flipping it. No way will i pay him double for his efforts. Or even 50% markup. I'll give the ass $300 or at tops $500 for a superdeal.
There is one outfit 100 miles away in LA that claims they will only charge $500 above the price of the auction car, irregardless of how much the car costs. I was going to give them a whirl, but again its that crap of tell me what you want and I'll buy it. Unuh. Me going to view car before i buy or no deal. To put 100% faith in an auctioneer to buy me a car i have not seen or driven. Bullschnizzle.
you consider a car on its third transmission to be not much maintenance?
Hmmm...have you considered buying a sense of humor?
don't you usually cup the balls when you put your mouth around a you ... i mean fabbs.
perhaps if it was actually funny I would have laughed.
Seemed to be a genuine post other than the husband auction part.
