Parker's latest injury his worst this season
    Jeff McDonald

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tony Parker's season-long re-enactment of the Book of Job took its most serious turn yet Saturday when he left the Spurs' 102-92 victory at Memphis with a broken right hand.

Parker fractured his fourth metacarpal while scrumming for a loose ball in the final seconds of the second quarter. For all intents and purposes, the injury will cause Parker to miss the rest of the regular season — after the game, coach Gregg Popovich said his starting point guard would be out “about six weeks.”

Parker, who had previously missed games this season with sprained ankles, plantar fasciitis, a strained hip flexor and food poisoning, is scheduled to return to San Antonio to have his hand re-examined by team doctors Monday.

Parker's latest injury is the same one that kept center Matt Bonner out for four weeks in December and January. After he returned, Bonner played with a soft brace on his hand for about a week.

Given that he's a point guard, and needs better ball control than a brace could give him, that might not be an option for Parker.

Bonner, the team expert on fractured metacarpals, envisions a tough recovery for Parker, a three-time All-Star.

“It's the same thing with me,” Bonner said. “All his shots and his floaters are on his strong hand. It has its advantages, when it's your hand and not your legs, so you can stay in shape. As far as your feel and your touch, that takes a lot of work.”

Duncan plays: Popovich continues to assert that Tim Duncan will sit the second night of some back-to-backs this month. Saturday just wasn't one of them.

Duncan played 31 minutes, 33 seconds against the Grizzlies, scoring 17 points.

With four back-to-backs remaining before the month ends, Duncan will have plenty of opportunities to sit in the near future.

“It's a tough month,” Popovich said. “As the month progresses, I'm sure his time will be limited here and there.”

Thinking of Stuckey: Antonio McDyess was watching Friday night's game between Detroit and Cleveland on TV in the weight room at the AT&T Center when Rodney Stuckey, his friend and former Pistons teammate, collapsed on the bench.

“It was scary,” McDyess said. “He's a young guy, and healthy. You don't expect that at all.”

Stuckey, who was examined and released from a Cleveland hospital, had not returned text messages from McDyess on Saturday. McDyess was relieved to hear from other Detroit contacts that Stuckey was OK.

McDyess back in lineup: McDyess started again at center after missing two games with a hyperextended left knee. He said the knee was still sore, but doctors assured him the pain would subside in time.

What is going on that we aren't able to have our trio healthy?

They're getting old, and both Parker and Ginobili aren't primarily jump shooters - they are taking it to the rim, drawing contact, and ending up on the floor a lot.

I attribute it to things evening out. During all of our runs we avoided serious injuries and now they are happening..Oh and we are old now

It helps to put things in perspective. Its incredibly difficult to win the NBA championship but the Spurs have managed to do it multiple times..can't say its just the odds catching up because how likely would it have been that a small market team like the Spurs would have reached the summit on 4 occasions?
Fate seems to be conspiring against SA; it seems we can never get the Big 3 healthy and on the court at the same time for any extended period. But any talk of tanking the season is actually insulting.. the Spurs are champions because of the way they play and carry themselves w/c is why I think a lot of us support them, win or lose.

This injury was a fluke; in a scramble for a loose ball, this is one of those things that could happen to anyone.

Getting an injury like that isn't something attributable to age....

This was a freak injury for the Spurs, especially since it has happened twice now! Very unfortunate it was his shooting hand. What a bummer. A five week absence would put him back with maybe a game or two left in the season.

Out of the big 3, Tony is the one that we can afford to do without for a while. No Duncan, forget it. No Ginobili, forget it. No Tony, plug n play.

We are a better team with him of course but we can cover his loss with band aids. Weird year for Tony. We've had to adjust without him all year.

All three guys out there and playing well helped the SAS to three NBA les. I just hate to see the light at the end of the tunnel now. It's an oncoming train.

Like someone else said, it's difficult to win the whole thing once and the Spurs have done it four times. I'm greedy like the rest of the posters here and want more, but it just is not in the cards.

Just remember, only the Lakers, Celtics, and Bulls have more NBA les than the small market San Antonio Spurs. I never dreamed I could say that 15 years ago.

We seem to be snakebit right now, unfortunately.
