luke bonner- austin toros is a beast
To talk about call-ups, assignees, prospects and the upcoming playoffs.
Shaun Livingston est finito. Atlanta is doubling him and he can't dribble or pass his way out off the double. I'm talking about him because he played in the DLeague last season and there are at least 100 point guards in the D-League better than him.
Alonzo Gee, former Spurs Summer League team, is a guy that may have a future in the NBA as a rotational player. Very athletic and aggressive. Subpar shooter and shaky handles, but he's a good cutter and has has good scoring instincts. Great finisher, explosive and good body control. Not completely one-dimensional, works the backboards and shows flashes of defensive ability. One of the few big time D-League scorers that may be able to transfer part of his scoring game to the NBA. If he can expand his non-scoring contributions he'll stick around.
Later we'll have the Warriors, a team filled with D-Leaguers, including former Spur Anthony Tolliver (current level: James Singleton; future level: 3rd/4th big if he learns to shoot) and Reggie Williams, the sensational lefty, fresh of dropping 28 points on the Hornets.
Chris Richard will play for the Bulls.
Useful info: you can watch D-League games in Futurecast, live or archived. Most games suck, same is true for the broadcasts quality.
Half-time, Reggie Williams with 10 points, Tolliver with 11/8, D-Warriors lead the Blazers.
what pos is reggie williams. he is on a 10 day contract correct?
He's a wing, can play 2/3 (he's 6'5''). Yes, he's getting his 2nd 10 day contract tomorrow. I think the Warriors will sign him till the end of the season after that though. Really smooth scorer, even if single-handed.
Three quarters of court lob pass from Williams right on money into CJ Watson's hands. He's a baller.
Don Nelson: "They're sensational players. There are very good players in the D-League, when you pick the right ones for your team they can contribute"
he played at vmi i saw. i remember them making or getting a win in the ncaa tourney recently.. maybe last year or the year before... wonder if he was apart of that team.
Honestly I've never heard of his college team, but he was the leading scorer in the college game for two consecutive seasons. Curry, Ellis and Tolliver with 5 fouls, it's going to be a battle for the Warriors. Tolliver seems gazed.
update - Maggette is braindead.
update - Warriors without the patient to break the zone, Curry turnover, Rudy with the triple, Maggette with the 3rd turnover in t6 possessions. Amazing meltdown from the non-D-Leaguers.
update - Curry is braindead. 3rd atempt in a row to make a cross-court pass, none worked.

comin down to the wire. dont know if they can do it without ellis
LOL
What was this? CJ is braindead. So ing stupid. ahahaahah Man, I'm so sorry for Don Nelson, it must be so hard to coach these re s.
Nelson to Watson: "CJ, what are you doing?!?"
Good game by the D-Leaguers anyway, the stupidity from Maggette, Ellis, Curry and Watson cost them the game. 14 points in 8 shots to Williams (the only Warrior able to slow down Roy), an efficient double-double for Tolliver (14/11).
yeah wow. that foul was ridiculous. i was like wtf
Sadly, CJ Watson is a D-League alumnus. Way to spoil the night for your former disciples.
Last night Cedric Jackson was solid in his first minutes with the Spurs, displaying his good physical tools, handling and unselfishness. Chris Richard was not so fortunate, dropping 6 fouls, 3 turnovers, 1 rebound and shooting 0-2. Alonzo Gee scored 6 in a losing effort for the Wizards and Jerry Sloan keeps jokey around Sundiata Gaines minutes not allowing the African warrior to get in a rhythm.
In the D-League the game of the night - it actually sold out! - Energy (first in the standings, leader of the EC) lost to the Red Claws (4th in the standings, 2nd in the EC), in a night of very poor shooting but frenetic pace. Mo Almond scored 21, Russell Robinson 18 and Curtis Stinson got a double-double with 25 pts and 10 asts. Cartier Martin and Earl Barron had subpart games, as well as Marcus Landry and Maurice Ager. No other potential NBA players I can think of. Highlights with cheerleaders dressed as hippies:
The Bakersfield Jam feature a few call-up candidates - athletic prospect Alade Alimu, scoring guard Trey Johnson and jump-shooting big man Brian Butch plus another NBA draft lottery pick and NBA veteran, Reece Gaines and used that start power to convincigly beat the pringfield Armor, probably the worst D-League team, coached by former dunk contest winner Dee Brown.
Erie beat Albuquerque on the back of a great exibhition by John Bryant, a very big stiff who lead the NCAA in rebounding last season. Way to slow for today's NBA though. Former Spurs Blake Ahearn also scored 25 + 10 dimes and Mike Gansey 20, meaning 3 white guys scored 73 points and dominated the game. Marcus Hubbard (21/10) and Trey Glider (20/7 and probably the only marginal NBA prospect of this game were the best for the Thunderbirds).
Talking about Erie, lottery pick Michael Sweetney will be joining the team. Sweetney's last appearance in a basketball court this side of the Great Wall of China was with the Celtics Summer League team and in the pre-season and he looked great. Literally. Looking forward to watch him with the Bayhawks, paired with the also massive John Bryant.
D-League dunk contest >>> NBA dunk contest
Plus, this is going to be a game for the ages:
Five Reasons To Watch 66ers vs. Vipers On VERSUS
by Matthew Brennan, NBA
On Saturday night, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers will host the Tulsa 66ers on VERSUS presented by Papa John's, with the game airing at 11:00 p.m. ET. If you are wondering why you should check out this week's NBA D-League game, here are five good reasons why you should tune in to VERSUS to see some of the NBA D-League's top prospects in action for two Western Conference rivals.
1. The Best Point Guards In The NBA D-League?
Saturday's game will feature arguably the two best point guards in the NBA D-League in Rio Grande Valley's Will Conroy and Tulsa's Mustafa Shakur. Conroy, one of the top players in NBA D-League history, has already received two GATORADE Call-Ups to the Rockets this season. He is averaging 15.1 points on .540 shooting and 10.1 assists since joining the Vipers in late December. In contrast, Shakur is in his first NBA D-League season and still searching for his first GATORADE Call-Up to the NBA. His debut campaign has been a sterling one, with the former Arizona Wildcat ranking sixth in scoring with 20.6 points and third with 7.1 assists. It can be said that Shakur is the best player in the league who is yet to receive a call-up this season.
2. West Conference Rivals
The Vipers have held the lead in the Western Conference for most of the season, but the 66ers, along with Austin, are trying to make a run at their lead with less than a month remaining in the regular season. Heading into Friday the 66ers were 4.5 games behind the Vipers for first place as both teams are aiming for their first ever appearances in the NBA D-League playoffs. This will be the fifth of six meetings this season between the teams, with each team currently holding two victories in the season series. The Vipers are looking to make amends for their last meeting with the 66ers, when they went into Tulsa in December on a six-game winning streak and dropped both games to the 66ers. The Vipers won the only meeting that took place in Rio Grande Valley so far, winning 104-100 on December 4 behind 30 points from Mike Harris.
3. Thunder Players On Assignment
As one of three NBA D-League teams owned by their NBA affiliate, the Tulsa 66ers have taken advantage of several assigned players from the Thunder. As of this writing on Friday it appears that the only one who will be in uniform for Saturday's game is center Byron Mullens. The 25th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Mullens is averaging 15.1 points and 8.3 rebounds in 16 NBA D-League games this season. He appeared in two of the four games (both losses) against Rio Grande Valley, averaging 22.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. In those games Mullens had to contend with Rockets assigned player Joey Dorsey as well as shot-blocking prospect Kurt Looby. He could be in line for bigger numbers on Saturday with neither of those two players remaining on the Vipers' roster.
4. Back From The NBA
Rio Grande Valley's Mike Harris returned to the Vipers last weekend after his second GATORADE Call-Up of the season. In 2009-10 the line for Harris has been outstanding, and he is definitely one of the main candidates for the NBA D-League's Most Valuable Player award. Like most NBA D-League teams, the 66ers have not been very successful in stopping Harris with averages in four games against Tulsa of 26.5 points on .583 shooting along with 7.3 rebounds. You can be sure that Harris is extra motivated against the Oklahoma City Thunder-owned 66ers after being cut by the Thunder in the preseason.
5. The Unsung Larry Owens
Mustafa Shakur and assigned Thunder players have been getting a lot of press in Tulsa this season, but one player who has played a big part in their success while flying relatively under the radar is forward Larry Owens. The 6-5 Owens has started all 39 games this season while averaging 15.6 points and 6.0 rebounds, and reserved one of his best performances for the Vipers, pouring in 27 points on 11-19 shooting in a Tulsa victory on December 19. Owens scored 37 in a game earlier this year, so he is certainly capable of a big game on Saturday night and can pick up the slack if some of the other Tulsa offensive threats are faltering.
The game is on Versus now. Mike Harris is going to score 44 points in 18 shots and add 12 rebounds, mimicking the line of his former teammate Luis Scola. He'll get another NBA call-up till the end of the season. Btw, BJ Mullens is pretty unimpressive.
Reggie Williams, Tolliver and Hunter playing well vs. the Raptors.
Cedric Jackson with a good show for the Spurs tonight, at least according to Spurs fans. Garrett Temple got a call-up from the Spurs, as yours truly predicted.
Dwayne Jones has not been called up, but the guy should be named Windex with how well he cleans up the glass. I know it is D-League, but averaging like 16 RBs a game is still awesome. He has had at least 20 RBs on eight separate occasions this season. He has had at least 10 RBs in 35 of 39 games. He has scored in double figures in 34 of 39 games, scoring 20+ fifteen times.
I honestly wish the Spurs would have given him a 10 day contract when they were deciding not to play Ian.
Dwayne Jones is a curious case - he was already called up for try-outs for a couple of teams but never gets the contract.
I don't understand why he doesn't get a call-up either - he's a stiff and an offensive liability, but he's not terrible defensively (at least if he's guarding backups) and is a very good rebounder. The Nuggets or the Mavericks could use a guy like him. I think he could be a decent 5th big.
Gee always reminded me of a poor man's Maggette. Strong and fearless going to the basket, gets to the line a lot but inconsistent doing anything else. Possibly gave the least effort on defense of any player on the Toros, but still had the most NBA potential of any Toro as well.
Springfield was missing three player to boot. Johnson should get a call up at some point, and as far as centers go Alimu would get the call up on potential and Butch would get it on current skill.
Hubbard is a maddening case. He has the quickness of a guard and great length but can't even put together two good games in a row. Gilder definitely has NBA potential I feel sorry for him since he got traded from Maine to Albuquerque, but they are so desperate for scoring he could be able to capitalize soon.Erie beat Albuquerque on the back of a great exibhition by John Bryant, a very big stiff who lead the NCAA in rebounding last season.
Every Maine home game I have seen has been a sellout. They really seem to have done everything right up there. In the D-League the game of the night - it actually sold out!
Poor man's Maggette is an excellent description for Gee. But that won't be enough to earn a place in the league. He has great tools to be a good rebounder+defender, must start using them to at least be slightly above average.
I haven't seen much of Alimu but he seemed completely braindead to me.
Johnson, yeah, he's probably the next in line if someone goes big man. I remember him playing completely out of control in Memphis and he sucked horribly in Europe (in a pretty weak German league), but he looks an improved player.
Butch needs to hit the squats. Guys with his size+shooting ability who arent' complete stiffs (and he actually has some mobility) can always sneak into the league, but he needs to be quicker lifting off the floor.

Alonzo Gee had 13 pts, 10 boards, 2 steals in 26 minutes tonight with the Wizards
Hey Mogrovejo, promises, promises:

Emphasis added.
And with that he earned a 2nd 10 day contract!
You're right, I want to watch some more film of him to clear some stuff and in the next couple of days I'll write it.
Hunter and Tolliver with solid games versus the Lakers. I particularly liked Tolliver defence. Williams didn't play much.
Chumpdumper's favourite Mustafa Shakur got a call-up from the Thunder. Well-deserved. Shakur is another very good defender (but not at Temple's level, IMO), who can play in your chest defence on most guards, with very good size for the position, an effective standstill outside shot and decent athleticism/quickness. He's a guy who likes the ball on his hands and to drive inside. He was putrid last season playing for Splitters team. He reminds me a bit of TJ Ford and his out-of-control drives inside and lack of purpose. This probably means Antonio Anderson is back in the D-League, but I'm not sure.
In the D-League, the Springfield Armor and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants won games yesterday! Over Albuquerque and Maine respectively (with Celtics' assignee Marcus Landry shooting 1-8.. sigh). Mo Almond and Rob Kurz were the gu
The other winning teams were the Skyforce (without Reggie Williams and Alexander Johnson! - how do they keep wining?) clearly the hottest team in the league and the Bakersfield Jam, a team that seems to me that could make a lot of noise in the playoffs with their current core - Trey Johnson, Alimu, Butch. I'm not sure if they still have a chance to qualify. I'll do the math one of these days. They defeated the Stampede (which seem to be declining) and the D-Fenders (who were never any good).
