On MSNBC, Libertarian Wayne Root Criticizes McCain and Questions Palin Tea Party Credentials

On Friday Mar. 26 a Bloomberg News story was headlined “Tea Party Advocates Who Scorn Socialism Want A Government Job”. The article was about a Bloomberg poll that found 26% of Americans agree when asked “Do you consider yourself a supporter of the Tea Party Movement?” Of those supporters, 70% agreed with the vague statement that “the government needs to do a lot more to create jobs”.

The poll also found that 53% of Tea Party supporters favored privatizing Social Security and Medicare, compared to 33% of everyone polled. 30% of everyone polled strongly agreed that “health care is a private matter and individuals should make sure their needs are taken care of, through insurance, public clinics, or by paying for services directly”. 52% of everyone polled said that for deficit reduction the nation should consider “reducing annual cost of living increases for Social Security participants”.

MSNBC asked 2008 Libertarian Party Vice-Presidential nominee Wayne Root about the poll, while displaying a graphic saying “Tea Party Hypocrites?” Root hadn’t seen the polling data and reiterated the Tea Party philosophy of “smaller government, limited government, lower taxes, economic freedom”, and said “government is a failure at creating jobs”.

Root went on to call John McCain “a big-government Republican” who “tries to scare you to death that the sky is falling, the world is ending, the terrorists are coming, and we’ve got to spend money. And by spending money, the government gets bigger and more powerful”. Root said: “What the Tea Party is about is common sense, and I think Libetarians have common sense. Sarah Palin has been involved in the Tea Party movement, but there are a lot of people who are questioning whether she’s a Republican who wants to get the Tea Parties to support Republican candidates, or whether she really stands for limited government, even if that means electing Tea Party candidates who aren’t necessarily Republican. That’s certainly where I stand.”

Root is the #2 headliner behind Sarah Palin at today’s Tea Party Showdown In Searchlight, Nevada. Before today’s rally this morning, Palin spoke at a rally for McCain.

I like step 4 and 5, personally, without having read his plan for step 4.

LetÕs first secure the borders to dramatically reduce future illegal immigration. At the same time letÕs enact the exciting and creative step of offering instant residency and an easy, quick path to citizenship for skilled, educated, and financially secure immigrants, which will help trigger a turnaround to small business and the American economy.


Specifically any immigrant who invests $250,000 into either a home, or a small business creating jobs in the United States, should be granted instant residency and a path to citizenship. Current programs are limited and so bureaucratically entwined as to be practically worthless. This plan is simple, loud and clear: bring money, skills, and resources to start businesses and create jobs and you will be instantly welcomed into the land of opportunity.


This step would instantly unleash the greatest period of immigration to America ever. But not just any immigrants. This plan promotes the right kind of immigration explosion. This plan would encourage millions of patriotic new Americans excited and motivated to live the American Dream. New citizens that love and appreciate capitalism and entrepreneurship. The passion of these new citizens will create an avalanche of new jobs, taxes, consumer spending, and investment in stocks, real estate and small business. America would suddenly add millions of the best and brightest and most ambitious middle class citizens from every country in the world. These immigrants would add jobs by the millions, instead of taking them. These immigrants would pay taxes by the billions, all while utilizing few, if any, government services. What a boon to the U.S. economy!

Border enforcement plus immigration reform for anyone with a quarter mil to invest, sounds like.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Sure it's "amnesty" but let's look at the facts.

There's millions of people living here illegally. There's only two ways to solve this problem:

1) Provide a relatively pain-free path to citizenship
2) Form up squads to knock on doors and demand papers

I don't see another way.

Although his idea that $250,000 grants immediate residency is just foolish on an amateur level. Background checks, at the least, should be done on any candidate. Did I particularly like forking over near $2,000 to get my wife a green card? Heck no, but I understand the reasoning.

You know how I think most terrorism fears are simple bogeymen, but any "instant" residency program could DEFINITELY be exploited by a terorrist group. Of course, this is assuming that citizenship would be beneficial to the terrorist cells.
