Man claimed 5-carat diamond ring was stolen
    By Denisse Salazar
    The Orange County Register

A vice president of sales for Verizon was arrested after he filed a police report saying that a 5-carat diamond engagement ring was stolen from his office and then filed several fraudulent insurance claims, police said.

On Jan. 26, Marcus Darryl Williams, 39, of Los Angeles, reported to police that the ring, valued at nearly $100,000, was stolen from his office at 5 Hutton Centre Drive, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Anthony Bertagna.

Williams said that he had the engagement ring in a backpack at his office because he was going to get it cleaned before giving it to his fiancée on Valentine's Day, Bertagna said.

The detective assigned to the case discovered Williams had several insurance policies and filed at least four claims, Bertagna said.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau, an organization dedicated to fighting insurance fraud and crime, detected Williams when he made several claims for the same diamond ring and gave conflicting stories of how the ring was stolen, Bertagna said.

"When the cat was out of the bag he claimed the ring mysteriously reappeared," Bertagna said.

Williams told police that someone dropped off the ring, but gave several versions of the story.

"He was trying to get $400,000 for a ring he had in his possession," Bertagna said.

Williams was arrested March 12 at his office. He has been charged with five felony counts of making false or fraudulent claims, according to Orange County Superior Court records. Williams, who is free on $20,000 bail, is expected to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on April 12.

Williams proposed to his fiancée, Bertagna said.

Williams was arrested in Chicago in 1995 for committing check fraud. He was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison, Bertagna said, but served one year.

Jon Davies, a Verizon spokesman, said "We are aware of this matter which is unrelated to our company. We are fully cooperating with the law enforcement investigation. It's up to the justice system to determine guilt or innocence."

Williams is no longer with Verizon, Davies said.
