    The 90% answer is wrong.

    If the acquiring team is over the cap, then the right answer is slightly less than 80%.

    Teams can acquire up to 125% plus $100,000 of the salaries they are trading in a simultaneous trade.

    If the acquiring team is below the cap it can be as little as 0%, depending on how much cap space the team has. If the team has enough cap space to sign the player outright, then the trade doesn't have to send any players back to the other team. The original team could receive a draft pick(s) and a trade exception. See the Rashard Lewis trade for a perfect example. Seattle received a protected second round pick and a 9M trade exception. Orlando sent out no salary in the trade.
