If it's a Mac, you can use the built in function in iChat.

Windows/MSN Messenger also have 'remote desktop assistance', which basically allow you to do the same thing on Windows.

It really depends on what capabilities your looking for.

If all of your customers are using Windows XP, you always have remote desktop available, which is built into Windows.

The downside of Windows Desktop is that the "customer" cant see what you are doing after you take control. It literally takes over their desktop and blacks out their screen while you are connected to their computer.

You can also try using the free version of RealVNC

    http://www.realvnc.com/products/download.html

This works for me when working with people across town, fixing their computers with *minor* issues remotely. They can see what you are doing and also works with a UNIX environment. Although the free version doesnt work with Vista, Windows 7 or Server 2008.

They also have a Personal edition as well as an enterprise edition and, depending exactly what you are looking for, They do support the more recent versions of Windows.

If your looking for totally free, but with no support, you might want to look at TightVNC

    http://www.tightvnc.com/

Just really depends on what you are looking for. Just keep in mind, anything other than Microsofts Remote Desktop, the client will be required to install the listener software, which is included with the RealVNC download;.

Also keep in mind that any kind of VNC software will also require you to punch a hole through the firewall, if one is available on the customer's site.
