What's odd about the numbers is that Duncan didn't try a three pointer in any of the first 21 games that season, then took 15 over the next 20 games, and then shot a total of 12 over the last 41 games. But in the second half, of his 12 attempts, 6 of them came over a 7 game span in mid-to-late March.

He actually had 5 different games in which he tried 2 3PTFG -- and in every case, he missed both of his attempts:

    12/22 v. GST (0-2) -- W
    12/26/00 v. HOU (0-2) -- W
    1/12/00 at DET (0-2) -- W
    1/17/00 v. TOR (0-2) -- L
    3/17/00 at HOU (0-2) -- L

Duncan has had 11 regular season games over his entire career in which he attempted 2 3ptFG, but in every other instance, he only had one such game in a season. That is, he had 5 games in 00-01 with more than 1 3ptFGA, but only 1 such game (at most) in any other season.

Pop was trying to get him to add a three pointer to his game to copycat Garnett. Fortunately they realized quickly that 7 footers with Duncan's inside game should not be spending any time at the three point line. Thus les in 2003 and 2005.

I think Pop and the rest of the NBA knew that circa 1997. By 1999 for sure.
