NBA legend David Robinson launching virtual academy

Former San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson, founder of The Carver Academy, is expanding his East Side educational campus.
Robinson, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, has created the David Robinson Virtual Academy, which will serve students in grades K-12 from across the U.S. with fully accredited curriculum.
The David Robinson Virtual Academy will operate independently of The Carver Academy. But the two schools will work together, sharing staff, creating a joint library and co-hosting educational events.
“The David Robinson Virtual Academy allows us the opportunity to expand the reach of the Carver Academy and offer the curriculum that has been so successful here to students throughout the country,” Robinson explains.
“Virtual academies are on the cutting edge of the education system,” he adds. “We believe in the program that we have developed at The Carver Academy, with students performing in the top tenth percentile of standardized testing. The creation of The David Robinson Virtual Academy allows us to share that vision.”
The virtual academy will feature an expanded curriculum and an accessible private-school education stressing the five pillars utilized by The Carver Academy: Leadership, discipline, initiative, integrity and service.
Robinson says those students who are enrolled in the virtual academy will have the opportunity to chat with students in Japan and to participate in virtual book clubs, robotics labs and field trips.
Robinson spent his entire 14-year NBA career with the Spurs. He opened The Carver Academy in San Antonio in the fall of 2001.
Named in honor of George Washington Carver, the academy currently serves about 120 students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. More than 95 percent of the students enrolled at the academy are on full or partial scholarship.
Says Robinson about the new virtual academy: “We hope to empower, engage and challenge young minds from coast to coast.”

This online school costs $6500-7500 per school year. I assume it is meant to appeal to people who home school their kids.
How does Robinson dish out scholarships after scholarships? How is this sustainable, even to a guy as rich as him?
I'm quite certain that it's not just him. It's a group of investors. Usually that's how these things continue to grow. Robinson laid the foundation and continues to be the central cog, but others have no doubt joined in the cause as well.
This is really what its all about. Robinson, Duncan, et al. are in a position where the amount of money that they make no longer improves their lives. Giving back is really the only thing left at that point. I'd do the exact same thing if I had a portfolio worth about nine figures.

Admiral Capital Group is a private equity firm whose mission is to invest in opportunities that can provide both financial and social returns. Robinson's primary motivation in starting Admiral Capital is to create a source of additional financial support for The Carver Academy. One big difference between David and a lot of NBA stars is that the man actually knows how to manage his money. I'd be willing to bet he has been fairly successful with his investments over the last 20 years, instead of buying bling and a new car every couple of months.
Admiral Capital is also a great idea, and from what I've read he's tapping into a vast network that spans the business and athletic world. David is the man. It's easy to SAY you'd give back like he does, but when you're actually looking a $9 million dollar donation or whatever in the face, I'm sure its not as easy as it sounds from where we sit.
That has been the biggest challenge for him. He has admitted to being overwhelmed by just how much it costs to run a private schol. At one time, they were aggressively trying to recruit parents who could afford the tuition to send their kids to the Carver Academy, but I do not think it netted very many fully-paying students. So, as listed above, he has ventured into some other arenas to fund the school, such as this virtual academy, which hopes to generate income from people outside SA who want to tap into the school's resources.
