The United States Bowling Congress says a central Pennsylvania man has set a national record with 47 consecutive strikes.![]()

Steroids. Gotta be.
actually, his first game was a 279 (missed the first frame), then he bowled 3 consecutive perfect games. could have kept going but league play was over so he decided to stop.
There's a us bowling congress?
Politics and bowling do go hand in hand I suppose.
i think im the man when i turkey
people say the way i bowl "looks like it hurts" and after one game my score drops like no other. i need to change up my style.
do any bowlers in here have any good tips about keeping a consistent spin on the ball?
Practice.
Also if you plan to bowl semi-compe ively, having your own equipment is a must.
yeah i was planning to buy my own shoes because rentals are ridiculous. its cost efficient in the long run.
Having your own shoes makes a big difference. I can't stand to use house shoes. I've bowled for ten years and they still make me feel like I'm going to bust my ass. It's hard to do anything repe ively if you don't have good balance. And you save a few bucks every trip.
Another thing that most recreational bowlers don't realize is that the bowling ball makes a big difference. House balls are made with inexpensive plastic covers that have no grip, so no matter how much rotation you put on the ball, it will only hook so much. More expensive bowling balls have reactive resin coverstocks, which allows them to grip the lane better and react more. That's how some people seem to throw those big hooking shots so effortlessly.
Well, that...and still lots of practice.
*Edit* Everything what Dex said.... Get your own ball and shoes. Everything I post below is assuming you are using your own equipment thats suited to your style.
Keep your hand under the ball. This is what generates the revs. Im guilty about forgetting this, I have to constantly remind myself. If I have a few bad frames in a row and wondering why my ball isnt taking the line Im expecting it to, this is usually the main problem with me.
Let the ball do the work after your backswing, at that point your arm is only a guide to get your ball to your mark. If your forcing it, you will be inconsistent and will tire yourself out eventually. You dont have to be hitting 18mph+ to get a strike, consistancy matters first. I bowl with a 16lb ball and see these guys whipping 14lb balls down the lane like they are trying to break the pins then get pissed when they get splits. Meanwhile My ball is barely hitting over 13mph and hitting the pocket everytime (well, as long as Im hitting my mark and keeping my hand under the ball).
make sure your not releasing too early and dropping it. I have to get on my brother about this all the time, it looks like he is trying to slam the ball through the floor. You want the ball to have a little air time to get the revs going.
Not sure how proficient of a bowler you are so this might already be obvious to you... make sure your standing in the same take-off spot every time. Those dots on the floor are there for a reason. Once you zero in on a dot you like, then start adjusting according to the boards.
Same with your mark. Dont be looking at the pins, look at the arrows a few feet out from the foul line. Aim at one of those until you find a good one then try and adjust by the board.
Sage advice. This was my first a-ha! moment as a bowler.
The key to a consistent ball isn't speed, it's rotations on the way to the pins. That's why pros use the fingertip grip. When the ball is at the bottom near your release point, you "pop" your fingers out and the effect on the ball's rotation is like flooring the gas on a dragster: extra spin for the distance covered.
If you want to get better, you can take a few basic lessons at your local bowling alley.
Yeah, my first fingertip ball was a Brunswick Fury.
I wasnt expecting the ammount of revs the first few throws and eventually was all the way to the right (Im a lefty) and was throwing practically all the way out to the left just to avoid going brooklyn.
I've since adjusted to it though.
thanks for the tip. the fingertip feels awkward, but with time ill improve. im still trying to get down a fluid "handshake". for some reason im always better after downing a sixpack. should i focus on the axis of the ball, or wait until im comfortable with my throw?
ill keep this in mind. we'll bowl 3+ games and by the time we're down my arm is sore as . thanks for all the advice. going to bowl in the union tonight. hurray for student discounts.
I thought I was a bowling geek. Glad to see others are worse than me.
I've also noticed time and again in league play how many bowlers will just pick up the ball with one hand. Use two hands to pick it up. It'll make a difference come the 7th frame in game 3....
Yep, or people who pick up their ball and hold it while waiting for the other bowler to finish. Sure, holding 16 lbs for 15 seconds may not seem like a big chore, but do it 20-30 times, and it's bound to take a drain eventually.
I had one tournament day that consisted of a 5-game quarterfinal, 8-game round robin, and 5-game stepladder for the championship. By the end of the day, my hand had swollen up three ring sizes.
But I know that cuz I took home the ring.![]()

Yeah, it is nice to know that there are other bowlers in this forum. What phyzik wrote was good advice for the beginner and the advanced. I've been bowling off and on for 33 years and I still refer back to books and videos that show the basics. Many times my game wonders and I have to go back to the beginning sort to speak. About speed, I throw only around 15 mph and anything above that I'll lose a little control.
one of the biggest things I ever did was to shorten my backswing and concentrate more on the follow through.
