Celtics veteran Wallace to retire after 15 seasons

    By David Aldridge, TNT analyst

    Posted Jun 24 2010 7:39PM
The Boston Celtics' expected rebuilding began Thursday when veteran forward Rasheed Wallace officially decided to retire after 15 NBA seasons, a league source said.

Wallace's retirement had been expected after the Celtics' seven-game loss to the Lakers in the Finals, but Boston had held out some hope that the 35-year-old would change his mind with a few days' contemplation.

Wallace signed a three-year, $18.9 million contract with Boston last summer, turning down offers from Orlando and San Antonio after the Celtics made a team-wide push to recruit him, sending Coach Doc Rivers, GM Danny Ainge and forwards Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Wallace's home to ask him to play in Boston. He left more than $12 million on the table by opting to retire.

Wallace was not in great shape at the beginning of the season, but saved his best play for late in the regular season and in the playoffs, stepping in at center when starter Kendrick Perkins was injured and could not go in Game 7.

A controversial figure who amassed numerous technical fouls in his career amid numerous run-ins with referees, Wallace averaged 14.6 points and 6.7 rebounds in his career, which included stops in Washington, Portland, Atlanta (for just one game before he was traded to Detroit), the Pistons and Celtics. He was the key acquisition in Detroit's run to the 2004 NBA championship, teaming with center Ben Wallace to form a nearly impregnable halfcourt defense in the paint.

Sheed played very well in the last few rounds of the playoffs and sucked in the regular season. I'll kinda miss him... somewhat. He was an entertaining player at least.

he's "retiring." near the FA deadline, he's going to the highest contender, which will probably either be the lakers or some kind of wade/bosh/amare/lebron combo team.

Good career, Roscoe. It's time to hang it up.

Congratz on going out the way you always did it, by being real, getting escorted out of Staples screaming conspiracy. That's who you are. And while it's both funny and frustrating at the same time, I still got love for what you did here in Detroit.

a whole lot better. he's a cult hero instead of the superstar he should have been.

guess it just wasn't what sheed wanted.

Real talk, Sheed had such a wide arsenal of undefendable post shots, he coulda been Tim Duncan with range if he wanted.

He's way too weak of a rebounder to be mentioned with those two.

When Sheed turned it on, there wasn't a PF in the league I'd take over him. His problem is that he so rarely turned it on.

And the Celts implosion continues. It started last Thursday night. Now Sheed retires. Ray Allen will find a new home and Doc isnt coming back. Pierce will either be dealt at the deadline or bolt next summer. KG has 2 years left so he will be a nice expiring to dangle around next summer. Perkins is expiring as is Baby Davis.

That is the plus side to all this is they can rebuild already. The only long term deal the Celts have is Rondo's.

    Dear Sheed,

    Thanks for not closing out.

    Signed,

He closed out pretty well there. Elliott barely got that shot over his fingertips. It looked like it was about an inch or two from getting sent in the stands.

Sheed didn't have it in him to ever be that great. He never wanted to be the man and couldn't take the pressure of it. Yeah he had all the physical tools, but he sure as lacked the mentality. It was a major flaw in Sheed's game.

Agreed. Considering he was covering for Augmon after the steal attempt, he defended it about as well as he could. Augmon should've stayed with his man.

Still, getting a hand up on a three and running a three point shooter off the line are two entirely different things. Looking back, those must be two tough shots to swallow.
