For those spurs fans or just other fans in general.
I train with the nearest NBL (Professional league in Australia) team during their offseason and preseason and perhaps playing season if everything goes well. Not a chance to get signed for the immediate or for-seeable future as their point guard position is locked up with two young very good players. Still hopeful further down the track however.
Anyway as I got to training I see the guys and someone I havent seen getting shots up before practice. Thought that he looked familiar but it didnt click in my head at all until coach got us together for our pre practice talk and introduced him. Admittedly I was a little bit shocked at first. Guy is just an unreal player and was easily the best player at practice.
Couple of things I noticed.
-First of all watching the NBA on TV gives the illusion that these guys are somewhat normal sized (bulk wise). Even he was built much more than any of the point guards or shooting guards in our league.
-The guy is quick as , again watching them on TV when everyone is somewhat able to compete at that pace makes them look like regular guys (maybe not regular but you get the picture). For a guy that size to be as quick and agile as he was really shocked me.
-Excellent team mate. He took the time to help everyone in water breaks if he thought he could share something to help us improve both as an individual player and as a team.
-Very vocal on defense but didnt say a word offensivly. Maybe because he wasnt as familiar with the offences but still he was loud as when the other team had the ball.
I got to talk to him a little bit during and after training, said he was out here for a bit of a holiday and to improve his individual defence, ball handling whilst in traffic and his descision making with the ball.
Cant think of much else right now. All I can say was that it was a totally surreal experience being able to play with and against a guy of that calibre.
Shared insights like this are what make ST an awesome place for Spurs discussion![]()
I like that part
Brett Brown spends tons of time with George Hill so it makes sense for Hill to go to Australia since Brown is probably there working with the Australia NT. Good to hear that Hill is still working hard.
Good aspects to concentrate on. His individual defense against smaller players was below average last season. His ability to penetrate and kick, especially in traffic, was almost non-existent.he was out here for a bit of a holiday and to improve his individual defence, ball handling whilst in traffic and his descision making with the ball.
The most exciting thing about Hill to me is the Spurs rave about his work ethic and he seems to have a perfect mindset. He knows his role within the team but isn't bashful about reaching his full potential.
Good to know he's working on those three things.
Cool post
timvp, you are likely spot on with that comment and I thought the same thing.
Australia, coached by Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown, has just wrapped up a 3-game series against Argentina (looked more like an Argentina U/21's). They didn't have a game in the Gold Coast though, which is where Hill was training. Still, I'm sure he will spend some time with Brown working on his game. I didn't see Hill anywhere near the bench when the Aussie's played in my home city though.
Would be nice if he could get some practice time with the Australian squad, Patty Mills is the type of small, quick PG that Hill struggles with.
this makes me happy
we should all work so hard on our weaknesses
Good move. Sure he's working but he's also in Australia. Not bad.
dleague > australia
FML the place very he trained is 30mins away........Man I so wish I could have seen him play and glimpse at a spurs player since Im aaallllll the wayyyy in Australia.
Put it this way, as a 12 year old i beat one of the 'best at the time' 3point shooters in the NBL in a shoot out.
And no, i'm in no way a good ball player - but I can/could shoot reasonably well back then.
That's awesome, mate!
MI21 - how did you work out it was on the Gold Coast?
