The Dallas Mavericks want center Brendan Haywood back.
"We're working to get Brendan back in a Mavericks uniform,'' Dallas general manager Donnie Nelson said Friday about the free agent who spent part of last season with Dallas after being acquired from Washington.
But Haywood won't come cheap. Big men always get paid, and Haywood's agent, Andy Miller, made it clear Friday his client, who made $6 million last season, won't be signing for the mid-level exception of about $5.8 million.
"I've always thought he's the best center (in free agency),'' Miller said of Haywood, who averaged 9.1 points and 9.3 rebounds last season
It would seem unlikely the Mavericks would agree to let Haywood go in a sign-and-trade unless a very top player became available for them. But Nelson, whose Mavericks were spending Friday trying to get a deal done to re-sign star forward Dirk Nowitzki, shrugged off a report the Mavericks were looking to pay Haywood a salary starting at around $8 million.

over ing paid but I understand it. After selling DUST Mavs will only have one center in Haywood so basically we can't afford to lose him, especially considering there isn't any better options out there.
40-45 over 5 years with the the last year not (or mostly) guaranteed would be a prett< nice deal.

Cuban will probably overpay him $10M.
Maybe before FA started he was worth the full MLE. Now his going rate is about $7-8M Per.
Mavs fans, how important is it to resign Haywood? I know the guy doesn't seem like a must have, but Dallas seems really low on rotation big men at the moment.
Like every other team in this market, facing the pressure to overpay to retain your players to remain "compe ive." The Gooden deal pisses me off, driving up Haywood's asking price.
The Mavs should trade for Okafor, to be honest.
They don't have choice, do they? Sign and trade Haywood for another centre? Not sure which team would be interested to overpay a center who has not been too successful in playoff
