I love how he talked about how updating the practice facility and offering meals was gonna change the culture of losing.

The question I've been asking about him and Chris Wallace since the off-season began. They have both sucked for years though.

Chris Wallace has actually made progress with the team he tookover and has produced a team that shows some promise, it's pretty clear how inept Kahn's been from day 1. People overrate GMs and don't consider the luck element. If Chris Wallace got the #2 pick in 2007 and Sam Presti got the #4 pick (when Memphis had the worst record in basketball), who knows what we'd think of each GM right now.

And the Nets just hired Billy King. I can't believe that these guys keep getting jobs. Memphis is not Wallace's first rodeo either.

I guess in some ways it's an extension of the corporate world, guys playing off their connections and being a part of the good ol' boys network. John Thain was hired again after he ran Merrill Lynch off a cliff.

Wallace has made some terrible moves, but one thing you have to consider is that he plays for a penny-pinching owner who has given him marching orders before to salary dump talent. They have a nice core if they're willing to keep it intact.

Wallace has also made several good moves, and he got what he could for Pau Gasol when he was probably facing a lot of pressure from both Heisley and West to trade him. Conley and Thabeet were two top 5 pick ups (but he had no way of knowing Conley was a lazy P.O.S.), but whatever he's done produced results. He took over a team that had the worst record in the league and now that team has a young roster than can make the playoffs.

Wallace has gotten lucky. At his core he's the idiot who just gave Rudy Gay $82 million. Or the idiot who gave Darko $7 million a year. Or the idiot who traded away a premiere big man for pennies.

Max out Pau Gasol? that! I'm gonna trade his ass for his younger, fatter brother.

    Max out Rudy Gay? yes!

I'm not denying he's made some really dumb moves, but you can't argue with the results. He's gotten lucky with a lot of things like trading for Randolph right when he decides to stop being a complete idiot and only a small idiot, but trading Kevin Love for OJ Mayo was legitimately highway robbery. Being forced to trade Pau Gasol and managing to get a promising young center out of the deal was somewhat savvy. Memphis is in way better shape than they were when he took over.

You can't honestly think he was the main man behind the Gasol trade. Heisley wanted to cut payroll and had tons of pressure from season ticket holders to trade Gasol, and we all know about the Jerry West involvement. I highly doubt a properly functioning human being voluntarily chose to forever be known as the GM that made that trade. There's a lot more to that trade than Chris Wallace.

You're right though about Rudy Gay. That'll be the downfall of any shot Wallace had at building a good team. This off season was his chance to improve Memphis but letting Gay go, resigning Brewer and making Memphis a defensive team with the offense run through OJ Mayo.

Disagree. They were making the playoffs and had a top 5 PF/C. Now they're trying to make the playoffs and have no one top 10 at their position. I am of course assuming Zach Randolph either goes to jail or goes back to being the second fattest person in the NBA (sup Eddy Curry).

The Rudy Gay deal is one of the worst deals this summer. Could be the worst when all is said and done.

He took over as GM of Memphis after the 2007 season when Memphis had the worst record in the NBA at 22-60. I'd hardly call that "making the playoffs".

I'm not seeing it. The Grizzlies record in the last seven years:
    2003-2004: 50-32 (made playoffs)
    2004-2005: 45-37 (made playoffs)
    2005-2006: 49-33 (made playoffs)
    2006-2007: 22-60
(Wallace took over as GM here)
    2007-2008: 22-60
    2008-2009: 24-58
    2009-2010: 40-42

Wallace took over a 22 win team. They are now a 40 win team. What are you not seeing, that's nearly double the win total from when he took over.
