Perfect timing. My third Netflix disc just died a couple days ago.
how long will 1 movie take to download or is it streaming?

1.03.01
A few seconds for it to "determine your video quality" and up comes the movie.
i got a ps3, can someone tell me whats the purpose of the hdd?
installs, porn, music psn games.
So playing with this today its pretty awesome. 5.1 is definitely there but I've yet to watch a movie with a good sound track to really get the full extent of how good it is or isn't. Now if you hit select on the PS3 controller you get to see what quality you're streaming at. I constantly see it say X-high/HD when watching TV shows today except at the start when it buffers up - then it says SD.
However, I don't have a true 1080 display so I can't tell if its 720 or 1080.
Not really much of a difference depending on the distance you sit from the tv.
Well also depends on your screen size. Larger screens can def tell the difference.
Looks great. Quality is just as good on my Xbox360, which I believe streams at the same rate. I also like the selection layout, which is easier to navigate (for me, at least) than on the 360.
disagree, I can tell right away diff between cable 1080i and blu ray 1080p.
IMO also depends on quality of the tv
just tried this out last nite and HD quality and performance is much better than disc netflix version.
and sound too btw. they still need to fix the GUI on this thing though
Tried it last night, too. Pretty sweet. They categorical breakdowns are a little too specific for my taste, though.
Still, "awesome possum."
The search feature is actually top notch. Finding whatever you want through that interface is great. You can also add discs to your normal queue using the PS3 interface now.
Oh I agree with you there about the 1080p, but I was talking about 720 vs the 1080i.
If you bought a quality 720p tv and a 1080i tv (would say up to 42'') and sat about 5-8 feet away from them, they aren't that much different. You're gonna be paying a couple hundred dollars more just for very subtle differences if you can see it. In fact, people think the 720p is better in some cases.

I don't think there are any 1080i TVs (at least in respect to being distinct from 720p), you're thinking of 1080p TVs. 720p and 1080i are virtually the same signal (some may argue 720p is better), but in any case, 720p TVs are also 1080i TVs.
But you were probably talking about the difference in between a 720p and 1080i signal anyways, which I agree isn't much of a difference.
Apparently Netflix is not using 1080i at all. Its either 1080p or 720p. Nice.
I looked at the graphic on CNET and it looks like Netflix for Windows Media Player. The layout if almost identical, and there is a search feature on WMP.
Nice indeed.
You found a movie to test the 5.1 yet? I just finished 2012 and I bet that movie would sound superb on the system.
Awesome. I'll be getting this in a few days.
I believe I read a lot of the 1080p is just upconverted 1080i (not all, but some to a lot)... now I say that with the statement of I could totally have misunderstood that and I could be completely wrong because I don't know if that's even possible... and I'm also too lazy to find the link. I think it was on engadget maybe.
No you're right. Not everything is available in 1080p in any format so the stuff that is out there and is 1080i is upconvereted for them to use at 1080p.
The episodes of BSG I've been watching have had some decent 5.1 but nothing that really has been mind blowing. Its streaming so having 5.1 at all makes me happy.
So far the quality is basically what you'd expect from digital cable but not blu ray. I think for streaming thats a damn good bar to meet.
The new netflix app is awesome. Way faster then before and 5.1 sound is great. Also when you pause and play it doesn't freeze like before the movie starts right away and when you hit stop, it goes back to your instant queue instantly. Unlike before where it would take a long ass time to load.
