"The year we drafted Drew Gooden. He has been in the league a long time. But we could have had Amare Stoudemire," West said.
"He would have added some cache and star power to this team. It's not that Drew is a bad player but Stoudemire is a star. We didn't look at him the way we should have. And you know, everyone thinks the Grizzlies have done a terrible job drafting and they haven't. The Griz are ranked ninth in drafting in terms of their history."

    2009: ThaBust at #2
2008: Love (#5) and M.Miller to trade up for Mayo (#3)
    2007: Conley at #4
    2003: Banks at #13
    2002: Gooden at #4

Other solid medium/late picks are all gone (Warrick, Lowry).

Just change the last two years and you got

    Conley
    Evans
    Gay
    Love
    Gasol

without the need to pay Zach 17 million.

The Grizzlies are obviously a joke of a franchise, yet they've managed to completely change the history of the NBA with 1 move.. , they even threw $ at Tony Allen to take him away from Boston, I wonder why..

There were a few teams that passed on Amare because of character issues. I believe he dropped to around 10 in that 2002 draft, which was overall weak. So that's says quite a bit. Plus, sometimes it's a little tougher to evaluate high school kids. I still remember the debate between Emaka Okafor and Dwight Howard, a real and serious debate on who the Magic should take #1. Seems like a silly debate now in retrospect.

Mayo is a better player than either Love or Miller, what's your point with that?

Uh i take Love anyday over Mayo and if u play "start a franchise with either Love or Mayo" at least 25 GMs will tell you Love...

That's pretty debatable. Love is a really nice young player. Great rebounder, really good outlet passer, and smart. But he's destined to be maybe a 16/12 type of player, which is very good but not a franchise player for a contending team, especially when you consider he's average to below average defensively. He's a big man who doesn't defend very well, can't block shots, and shoots 45-46% from the field. Not really a franchise type player.

OJ Mayo had a lot of hype when he came into the league. Probably not as good as some had envisioned. But he looks like he'll be a consistent 18-20 PPG scorer for most of his career.

Bigs are generally more important the perimeter players but that doesn't mean a very good rebounder automatically is more important than any perimeter player. I think it would probably be closer to a split among GMs who they'd take over the other.

Its harder to find a Kevin Love than a OJ Mayo and i take a potential 16/12 big over a 18-20PPG guard....

16/12 would be great for Kevin Love if he averaged that over his career. Getting a rebounder like that is definitely an asset. But because his defense is below average, it offsets his above average rebounding ability.

He's similar to Troy Murphy in that he will put up impressive rebounding numbers and has nice touch on his jumpshot, but if he is the core guy of your front court, the team will be very weak defensively. If you have a 20 PPG scorer, that's probably around a top 20 scorer in the league. Would appear that Mayo should develop into a consistent 20 PPG scorer over his career. I think there would be plenty of NBA GMs who would take that over Kevin Love's great rebounding. I'll agree that finding a great rebounder is tougher to find, but a great rebounding big who can't be a good defender as the franchise player on a team means that team probably won't be very good. I think GMs would look at it that way, and that's why I think it would be closer to being split.
