I already posted something similar to this on a Suns message board, but it's remarkable enough to post again. The reputation Sarver has as cheap couldn't be more wrong, this off season proves he's not cheap, just incredibly stupid. After harping so much about how he can't give Amare too much guaranteed money, he ended up s ing out more guaranteed money than he needed to, cutting off his nose just to spite his face.

The Bulls this offseason signed Ronnie Brewer and Kurt Thomas to contracts that totaled roughly $15,000,000 in guarantees. The Suns signed Channing Frye and Josh Childress to contracts that totaled $60,000,000 in guarantees. Ronnie Brewer is basically Josh Childress with better defense. Maybe some might argue Frye is more valuable than Kurt Thomas because of his shooting, but generally teams that want to win championships have a starting center and backup center who can rebound and defend the post. In other words, Sarver s ed out 4x as much as he needed to for two dime-a-dozen players when there were better alternatives out there.

In addition to Frye and Childress, Sarver gave Hakeem Warrick a $20,000,000 contract, a scrub they didn't need who will struggle to find PT, and added $30,000,000 in guarantees to the roster when trading Barbosa for Turkoglu. Toronto woulda dealt Turk anyway possible, Frye wasn't gonna get that deal anywhere else, Childress was barely a rotation player in Europe, and Warrick was let go of by the MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES because he didn't play enough defense for them. Somehow, Amare Stoudemire isn't worth $100,000,000 in guarantees, but 4 role players all outcast from their previous teams are worth $110,000,000. The end result of this logic is a team that was in the WCF last year now being a team that will struggle to make the playoffs with nothing but role players to build around in the future.

Compare that to what Sarver could have done had he not been extremely stubborn and hard headed about refusing to pay Amare what he was gonna get on the open market.

*draft Lawal and Collins like they did anyway

    1) Give Amare the guaranteed 5 year deal he wanted ($100,000,000 in guarantees added)
    2) Use the MLE on Brewer and Kurt Thomas, letting Frye walk ($15,000,000 in guarantees added)
    3) Rather than trade it for Turkoglu, trade Barbosa for an expiring deal (roughly $7,000,000 in guarantees subtracted)
    4) Find a veteran combo guard to full out the roster with ($1,000,000 in guarantees). The end result of this is:

    PG: Nash/Dragic/combo guard
    SG: J-Rich/Brewer/combo guard
    SF: Hill/Dudley/Clark
    PF: Amare/Clark/Lawal/Collins
    C: Lopez/Thomas/Lawal/Collins

This team, a CHEAPER alternative (it nets a total of $109,000,000 in guarantees added compared to $110,000,000) to what Sarver ended up doing, is roughly the same team that made the WCF only with less jump gimmicky and better defensive personnel. But hey, I guess it wasn't a risk worth taking in the event Amare's contract doesn't pan out. Taking on contracts everyone knows suck from the get go is a much safer bet.

Sarver is not cheap but he is making stupid decisions just to save money.
Why would you let go of Amare when he is a dynamic player who can draw the crowd in PHX. Also, letting go of Steve Kerr by lowballing him (lowball offers were according to local radio).
I can understand the extension for Frye since they need the offense but they didnt have to overpay for a shooting center who cant defend. Warrick as pf for the suns will be a hot mess.
Turk complained about not getting the ball so he can run the offense for the raptors..The Suns' strategy is the hot player will shoot the ball and Nash will facilitate the offense, is he going to be a bum again and and whine on his new team?

But see that's what's so stupid, HE'S NOT EVEN SAVING ANY MONEY. He was so concerned with showing the world Amare isn't worth a 5 year max deal that he did some dumb things that will cost more money and sell less tickets.

wow it seems to me like hes more stubborn! because as a business person theres just no logic behind these moves now that you made it seem so clear.

he ended up spending more than what he would have extending amare! but he spent more in the most stupid way, its almost like he let amare walk "just because he said so" and thats it! very strange man, i just couldnt believe they got rid of him after finally beating their nemesis my spurs then they let their most talented player walk??? does the man have alzheimers?

    son he isn't a complete fool ....

Despite rumors, Sarver not selling Phoenix Mercury

There’s been some scuttle around town that Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver might want to unload the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.

An official with the Suns organization said Sarver does not intend to sell the Mercury. “He is not looking to sell,” said the team official who asked not to be identified. The San Diego bank executive bought the Mercury in 2005 after purchasing the Suns in 2004. The two teams share the US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix.

The Mercury have done great on the court winning two les in three years. That’s one more than the Arizona Diamondbacks and two more than the Suns and Arizona Cardinals.

They have the league’s marquee player, Diana Taurasi, and are in the hunt for another championship right now.

Any owner who purposefully(spelling ?) puts a roster like this on the floor isn't cheap.
He just wants to make money before he sells.
