I’m digging Tiago Splitter, his guards should too
    by Timothy Varner
    48 Minutes of

During yesterday’s Spurs victory over the Hornets, Tiago Splitter’s minutes (excluding garbage time) came during a 9:19 stretch that bridged the first and second quarter. Spurs scribe LJ Ellis awarded Splitter a ‘B’ for his play and registered this comment, “Gave very good effort in first half but hurt team’s rhythm.”

Ellis is on the mark, and I’d like to talk about both of these things: Splitter’s effort and the offensive rhythm that kept missing a beat.

I love his mobility and his sense of awareness on the court (like an upgraded version of Oberto really). His pick and roll skills are quite polished and they should be going to that quite a bit as the season goes on. One thing I think he needs to work on though is his balance. He's a bit like a giraffe out there at times. He needs a much stronger base IMO.

Yes, it was frustrating to see him getting ignored, when he was open for easy basket opportunities.

Theyve been doing it all year, only when manu is in does he get the ball.

Imo Tiago either needs to be a starter or Manu needs to come off the bench in order to really maximize Tiago's strengths but the team has been playing well regardless.

Manu's got great court vision and he's the best on the Spurs (and one of the best in the NBA overall) at passing and integrating new players. We saw this last season when Manu took Blair under his wing and this season when Manu and Tiago are on the court together.

Tiago, like Richard Jefferson last season and plenty of moments this season too, doesn't get the ball despite being open and being in a prime position to score. This is arguably because the only pass-first guard on the team is Chris Quinn and the Spurs are loaded offensively, plus it seems like most of the Spurs don't trust NBA rookies as much as Manu does.

Tiago isn't going to benefit from playing alongside of Hill. The fact is Hill missed Tiago rolling to the hoop on a couple of occasions. I hope he gets better at this because as hard as Tiago works setting the table for others, he needs to be rewarded for by having someone feed him the rock.

As long as he is helping Tim Duncan in the paint he could score 0 points for all that matter. Any points he makes is just gravy

I have always and still do believe Tiago is a winner and knows how to play smart as proven by his play in Europe.

It's up to Pop to bring out the best in him very soon. The Spurs don't have years to wait for the chemistry to build, so Pop really needs to give him some more time and let him feel his way into the game. Come on Pop, you're not getting the hall of fame for nothing. Show us you know how to develop this guy before our Timmy leaves and give him some more playing time!

    Splitter = Oberto V 2.0

    LOL
The Spurs won a championship with Oberto. I'm sure most teams would love to have a younger, more athletic version of Oberto.

This is a great "situation" to be in for us. It means that there are still ways we can improve as a team and that looks promising. With splitter and anderson still not integrated, we still are a very different team from last year. The focus has shifted from Duncan to Parker and Manu, and that has confused the opposition, as we are really unpredictable. Imagine Splitter and Anderson being fulling integrated coming playoffs and next year.

Hill has tunnel vision on the court. He's almost never looking for that attacking pass to score, he usually only passes after his scoring opportunity closes or to simply feed the post. That's why the ball stops a lot when he's on the court and things seem sluggish at times. If he could ever develop that vision and timing to set up others on the move it will open up his scoring opportuniities as well.

I'm actually getting somewhat frustrated with Hill's deliberate, ball-stopping, wild-ass forays into a packed paint. Taking open shots is one thing. Taking your man off the dribble is also acceptable. However, ignoring a rolling big on a pick and roll, or barrelling into a clogged lane, while open shooters are on the perimeter, is just dumb.

Because Hill is incapable of running the point himself, it's very clear that either Manu or TP need to be on the court, in order to ensure continuous ball movement. He'd better learn fast and on the fly.

Thats not quite true. Tony hit him with almost 5 passes off the high screen and roll for easy points in an earlier game. Tony sees him just fine. Hill never sees him.

Yes, that was the 18 point game he had. What about the other 15 games? Parker is better than hill delivering him the ball, but not by much. This is reminiscent of jefferson being somewhat ignored last year, maybe as they get to know splitter, get more touches, one can only hope.
