    NBA Today 12/8

Ryan Russillo was talking about this on NBA Today. Who are the top 5 SG's in the league (not just top 5 this year but top 5 for a while now - past performance matters).

His top 3 he considers locks at Bryant/Wade/Ginobili. He's pretty sure about the 4 spot being held down by Joe Johnson which I'm fine with.

Blazers fans don't fret - he gave Brandon Roy his due and said that he'd easily be top 5 were it not for his injury right now. Barring injuries B.Roy is obviously top 5, but being injured...yeah.

Who's the 5th best shooting guard in the league? Russillo says Eric Gordon hasn't done it for long enough to be considered top 5; I agree.

I'm inclined to say Kevin Martin. Thoughts? Monta Ellis?

Problem with guys like Ellis though - you can't really go by scoring alone. Guy takes a ton of shots per game.

    Russillo's rankings:
    1. Kobe
    2. Wade
    3. Ginobili
    ============
    4. Joe Johnson (B.Roy if healthy)
    5. ??? (B.Roy if healthy)

    Kevin Martin/Monta Ellis/Jason Richardson?

Vince Carter isn't anywhere near what he used to be. Ray Allen - ehhhhhh.

There's a pretty big drop-off after the top 4, even though Joe Johnson hasn't been that good..

I'm not a fan of any of the next few guys..Martin, Ellis, Richardson and Gordon..

If I had to pick, I would go:

    5. Martin
    6. Ellis
    7. Gordon
    8. Richardson

You can debate the order in many ways though, it's really close, although Richardson is more difficult to compare, since his role is much different than the others..

Jason Terry also probably deserves strong consideration. Stephen Jackson I'm hesitant to put into the discussion mainly because he's been doing it on a terrible team. It's just not that impressive when your team is ing terrible.

JET though...Mavericks have been an elite team for a while now and Terry has always been in the loop among "partial" second options on Dallas among kidd, butler, and himself.

I'm thinking 5-8 spot right now. I might give Jason Terry the nod over Eric Gordon to be honest if you consider the past few years - not just this season alone.

    1. Kobe Bryant
    2. Manu Ginobili
    3. Dwyane Wade
    4. Joe Johnson
    5. Monta Ellis
    ---
    6. Eric Gordon
    7. Kevin Martin

I'd say that's the upper echelon at that position right now.

We all know Manu is not the best shooting guard. Why do people keep saying "but...but...for these 5 games he was!" It just sounds so desperate to try and validate Manu like this. He's someone who has not been able to log heavy minutes in his career because he's fragile. When he's healthy and he's on his game he's great, but the story of his career is he's great in spurts and this is why he has only been an all-star once in his career. The big picture is that he's a good player and sometimes a great player, but he's not the best SG in the NBA and he will never be the best.

Actually, so far this year he's clearly been the best SG in the NBA. What happens the rest of the season remains to be seen.

I don't give a ...all that ing is meaningless right now...The NBA is boring to me right now...I'm just waiting for the Play-offs and subsequent le game...and banner parade...in the interim perhaps I shall fill my time with more white-water rafting...

I wasn't just referring to your comments. There is a pattern here that people try to claim Manu is the best because for a certain stretch of games he played great. He's not the best and never will be. He has never been able to sustain great play and this is why he is a one time all-star.

Well, Manu could average 27 ppg if he wanted to, but he isnt a ing ballhog

Besides, he is always injureed because he does the little things the Kobes and Wades of this world don't do: diving for lose balls, etc....

Eric Gordon has only been in the league for 2 years. By default he hasn't done enough to warrant being in the top 5.

Where's the kevin martin love? Guy's performed well for much longer than Eric Gordon has, and both are on ty teams (right now). EG's done enough to be in the top 10 overall because his play THIS YEAR has been so spectacular, but we're not talking about top SGs THIS YEAR alone.

    Top Shooting gaurds:

    1. Dwayne Wade (Miami has been over achieving everyear he's been healthy)
    2. Kobe Bryant ( Kobe is the most skilled player to ever play this game. Kobe needs to assert his will more to be on Jordan's Level).
3.Manu Ginobili (In a short game series, Manu is a 3way tie with these guys. But hes still inconsistent and turns the ball over during stretches)
4.Joe Johnson (The guy doesn't have the athleticism and energy of the guys above, but he is solid in every single area)
5.Jason Richardson (This guy is super efficient, Super athletic, and a the best 3 point shooter at present right now)

These are the only mentionable players... Andre Iguodala has been in decline since age 25 for some reason. Kevin martin is a ballerina. Monta Ellis would be ty on a true contender.

O yes. Eric Gordon is still too young. He would probably be tied with Monta Ellis at #6. But #6 doesn't matter in this discussion.

I agree with you, but to be fair to the Magic at least Lewis was signed after a pretty good year, while JJ was dismail playoffs. Why the Hawks signed to that contract is beyond me.
