Yeah I agree that consolidation is a stupid idea.
Contrary to many current players' beliefs, the NBA is not the "let's make sure all of the great players get their ring in order to establish any legacy" league. Why do we gotta satisfy all of these bags?? that, it's all because of this phenomenon in sports culture where we all, fans, journalists/media, retired players now part of media, are so damn caught up on the championships = only individual importance. Everyone is so worried about how they'll be remembered and it turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy as if it's the only thing that matters, period, in terms of a players career.
The way I see it, you can have a very respectful career and go down as a legend regardless if you win a championship. And this is obvious, but people gotta stop getting so caught up with the championship talk in every argument. No matter who we compare, it always comes back to ring count ultimately and I'm sure it influences many players' choices. Clearly it does for a few. consolidation, if we have the sporting economy to support 30 teams and X amount of players, why settle for less? Only roughly 3% of NBA players win an NBA championship any given year, and assuming the stars are well spread around the league,..yeah, retiring without a ring is NOT the end of the world...it's ok.

I don't get this. I remember a few years ago all we did was talk about how smart guys like Horry, Barry, and Finley were for coming to play with Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili and how stupid Jermaine O'Neal, Jason Kidd, Stephen Jackson, etc. were for wanting to be the man instead of trying to win rings.
30 teams, 450 players is obviously too many. Not enough talent in players, coaches, staff.
Avg salary is $5M, and 2000 of the 2500 games are meaningless, unwatchable dreck vs dreck.

Well I certainly never would speak negatively of the players in bold for trying to be the man, but the cases that you mention all have something in common: they were old and washed up, not young and in their primes. And in Horry's case, he averaged 7 and 5 for his career...he was never a top 30 player during any season in the NBA. Old guys like Karl Malone and GP weren't "the man" level of players when they joined the Lakers...they were a fraction of their former selves.
Wade and James, by contrast, are 2 of the top 5-8 players in the league and certainly 2 of the best perimeter players, along with another all-star in Bosh.

Jermaine O'Neal was in his prime when people here ragged on him for staying in Indiana to be the man. Stephen Jackson was just entering his prime when he walked to Atlanta. Kidd had just turned 30 and was still in his prime.

The problem that the majority of the league's total games are meaningless does indeed suck in context of your point, but it's not nearly as bad as in baseball and I think it could successfully be changed if the league wanted. It could still be a successful product overall, and if downsizing slightly equates to a 50ish-game season, yeah, I'd be all for it. When you have teams completely not caring about the regular season, yeah, it does take away the whole damn point.
To successfully complete the comparison though, socialism would probably result in something like: average salary= 500k, 2 games per season
or average salary = 90 million, 250 games per season
or average salary = something re ed, gamer per season = something re ed, everything else = something re ed because socialism is always re ed.
I never ragged on Jermaine or Jackson or Kidd, nor do I have the best memory of what the mass-opinion was, but yes, you've hit something on the head: humans do indeed act hypocritical, naturally, often for some type of self-justification.
Another thing to consider:
For me, I wouldn't have had a problem in the situation where a star like Kidd could have come to the Spurs, for example. The Spurs are unique in that they developed all of their stars. Sure they seem to have a pretty dominant big 3 core, but they've been here forever and were here before they were quality NBA players. All 3...Tony, Tim, and Manu, have only played all of their NBA games for 1 team. Tim was drafted from college, Tony came in a young player from France, and Manu another case of finding foreign, unknown talent and developing it into something awesome. They didn't buy their team in order to build it, they simply built it.
This is another reason why I admire the current FC Barcelona team in Spanish soccer...on paper it is literally an all-star team, which is similar to many big time clubs in Europe, but what separates their current roster is that the majority of the club's big names were developed in their youth academy, "La Masia". The norm in European soccer is to spend billions of dollars that you don't have in order to purchase the game's top talent, temporarily, for 2 or 3 years and then get rid of them and buy a whole new roster of top talent.

I understand why. True compe ors are naturally going to want to win championships. But one must ask...how much of a compe or are you when you play the "zero-sum game", and join a team like Lebron did. It leaves little room for compe ion, and IMO, is like playing basketball on the easy level. Lebron may win championships with Miami, but will always have an asterisk next to his name for being a "steroid using "
