You can thank the Department of Education for mandating lowest common denominator performance in High Schools.

Oh off, WC, DoE didn't do anything to cause nationwide fall off in educational standards. It's been going for decades. Public schools are controlled locally.

NCLB, aka Fed govt "nannying public schools (with unionized teachers the main target), has been a "teach to the test" unfunded disaster.

    Forgotten was:

d)every special-interest group in the country is gunning to remove/update/alter its own pet facet of the curriculum such that what is taught is the least challenging, least controversial, least stimulating version possible of any given subject. So not only is it boring to young kids -- it doesn't have anything to teach our kids to begin with.

    Oh, and;

    e)it is mandated.

OK, my choice of words is a bit off. Still, the DoE is not needed and cause problems we didn't use to have.

Tell me. What improvements have they caused?

Just speculating, but maybe a higher percentage of Americans got to go to school and fuel the internet revolution. The timing is certainly right.

Now maybe you can tell me how the DOE is responsible for issues pertaining to state's rights?
The primary functions of the Department of Education are to formulate and administer federal funding programs involving education, such as college financial aid, collect data on US schools, and to enforce federal educational laws regarding privacy and civil rights

There simply is no need for federal oversight of the schools, and some could claim it uncons utional.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Cons ution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

yeah, "some could claim" wanting kids to stop being obese, hypertensive, pre-diabetic by gorging on BigFood's industrial food-like substances is state nannying.

Surely, part of the issue is that years ago many of these kids did not even try to go to college.

At the community colleges, the proportion of new students who need remediation has actually fallen slightly during that time. But because of growing enrollments, those students’ numbers have climbed.

You don't think the state and local control is enough?

Do you really think everyone wants or needs your nanny?

"think the state and local control is enough"

it "should" be plenty, but the dubya Repugs didn't think so, so we got NCLB.

Ask the Repugs about nannying, vaginal intrusions, anal intrusions, electronic disrobing, natal miscarriages as crime scenes (guilty until proven innocent), etc, etc.

So why not eliminate the DoE?

NCLB was just the warm-up for Obama's Race To The Top, which is regarded in teaching circles as NCLB on steroids.

The neoliberal atttack on public education is a bi-partisan affair. You won't recognize public education if Obama, Arne Duncan and Bill Gates have their way.

Not only are college students entering college uneducated, they are leaving uneducated (but well entertained and fun-loving)

    College the Easy Way

A provocative new book, “Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses,” makes a strong case that for a large portion of the nation’s seemingly successful undergraduates the years in college barely improve their skills in critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing.

A provocative new book, “Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses,” makes a strong case that for a large portion of the nation’s seemingly successful undergraduates the years in college barely improve their skills in critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing.

the point of the college experience is to have a good time and walk away with a valuable credential after putting in the least effort possible.

the average amount of time spent studying by college students has dropped by more than 50 percent since the early 1960s

Many of these young men and women are unable to communicate effectively, solve simple intellectual tasks (such as distinguishing fact from opinion), or engage in effective problem-solving.

I was shocked when I went on a college visit to Trinity, and someone asked a student how much time she spends on homework each night. She said an hour! The questioner tried to clarify that she meant total, not for each class, and the girl stated that she meant 1 hour total! Whatever happened to 2 hours of homework for each 1 hour in class.

In short, they want to replace the commons with the market.

Double down on the NCLB narrowed curriculum and high stakes testing, larger class sizes, teaching as a service industry rather than a profession, charter schools, privatization, union-busting, Mayoral control, etc.

    plus teaching anti-pluralistic, faith-based Christian Taleban/supremacist crap

    and

the false equivalence/equal plausibility between creationism bull and hard science.
