2005 was the last year that a team that eliminates the defending champion goes on to win the NBA le. But earlier (in 2003) the Spurs actually did it to the Lakers. In 2004, the Lakers eliminated the Spurs but lost to the Pistons in the Finals. In 2006, the Spurs were eliminated by the Mavs but the Mavs fell to the Heat in the Finals. In 2007, the Heat were eliminated by the Bulls. In 2008, the Lakers took out the Spurs but lost to the Celtics. In 2009, the Celtics were ousted by Orlando but the Magic lost to the Lakers in the Finals. 2010 was a successful defense of the LOB trophy by LAL and in 2011, the Lakers were booted out by the Mavs which means that, if the trend is still in play, the Mavs won't win the NBA le this year
