google "eyeglasses ripoff racket"
Lots of people have exposed the eyeglasses racket. Hearing aids are another huge racket.
Just about as bad a dentists, and in fact all of American sick/person "care".
I've been working for an optometrist for the past year and next to an optical shop as well and I've found out how amazingly expensive glasses are. I got a free pair next door but I wanted another pair and didn't want to drop hundreds on glasses so I checked out Zenni Optical online to see if they made quality glasses.
I got my first pair from them yesterday and I paid about 45 for them including shipping.
The frames aren't designer but they have a ton of styles and you can probably find something you like through their selection.
The lens quality is pretty damn good though. They made my prescription exactly on (there is a tolerance most optical shops try to hit but Zenni got it dead on) which I find pretty impressive and they look really good. Some of the labs we get insurance glasses through send out really crappy work and its really evident right away.
In any event, its just one pair of glasses but I figured not many people knew of this site and I know that with as expensive as glasses can get that perhaps someone could use the info that these guys are much cheaper and they actually do good work.
40 bucks or so (a of orders will likely be cheaper) for glasses will probably save a lot of people a lot of money.

Yeah, glasses are a pretty huge racket, IMO. Some of the people that go next door and drop 700 on a single pair of glasses. Its amazing how expensive they are and how cheap they are to make.
Last time timvp ordered glasses, he got them online for around $10-15I forgot the name of the site, but they were decent. (He switches up between glasses and contacts, so doesn't need anything fancy.)
We also found a place where you can order contact lenses from Canada without a current prescription (in case anyone needed new contacts but didn't want to pay for another eye exam/updated prescription).
I'll need to look into all those options. I haven't gotten new glasses in about 10 years because I think it's absurd to spend $500 when I wear contacts 90% of the time.
Too bad Mr. Nutzitch went out of business.
I tend to spend a lot on glasses. More than I probably should. But I have to wear them all the time, so it's worth the cost to get something I love.
I also take really good care of my glasses. Last time I got a new prescription I just swapped new lenses into old frames that I wasn't ready to stop wearing. I've had the pair I've got on now for almost four years, first and sunglasses and now clear, and they're still in almost perfect condition. Lost one tiny rhinestone, but nothing's loose or crooked.
I've been wearing my new glasses from Zenni Optical for a few days and I'm quite pleased. I haven't noticed any quality difference from the last $250 pair I bought. Finding a well fitting, flattering frame was easy using their pic uploader; I don't have a prominent bridge on my nose and I have high cheekbones so I already knew to avoid a large frame that might rest on my face, which made it even easier.
So far, an absolutely great buy for a basic pair of contact lens down time glasses. All for a grand total of $28.75 including shipping![]()
well, I just dropped $300 on some Versace frames, but I don't feel too bad about it because they were $100 less than anywhere else I could find em' and they look/fit great.
I also like the convenience to drop by my optician to have them adjusted whenever the need may arise.
FYI most opticians will adjust glasses whether or not you bought them there.
Glad to hear your glasses are working out for you MM. I think I'm going to order some sunglasses from Zeni soon.
Huh, had never tried getting them adjusted from anywhere other than my own opt. Must confess that buying glasses online had never occurred to me, though. It will certainly be something I look into in the future, especially after reading how much money you guys saved
