Should have tilted one of the towers above the cloud so it better resembled the collapse. Seriously, how can someone not think 9/11 seeing that?![]()
MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud projects evokes regarding 9/11.
The Cloud was designed based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city. It is one of many projects in which MVRDV experiments with a raised city level to reinvent the often solitary typology of the skyscraper. It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt, it was not our intention.
The design inspiration of The Cloud is visualised in the first image on our website, a cloud covering the centre of the Sky scraper.

Where's Mouse? He's probably all over this already.
i see nothing wrong with this man
I bet you don't, mate.
If it was intentional, it's in poor taste. But, if not, I think it's just an unfortunate coincidence; because, the concept of the staggered apartments with terraces, gardens, and balconies is pretty cool.
No reason not to take the designers at their word unless someone knows something to the contrary.
This is not surprising, Asia has been waiting for a chance to troll us for milking 9/11. South Korea won the contest via a Dutch firm. Nothing to see here, move along.
The building on the left? Or the two in the middle?

My report last Friday on the planned South Korean towers that resemble the World Trade Center enveloped in an explosive “cloud” on 9/11 provoked an angry message from a spokesperson for MVRDV, the Dutch architectural firm that designed the towers. In my article, I quoted MVRDV spokesman Jan Knikker, who told the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, “I have to admit that we also thought of the 9/11 attacks.” The admission directly contradicts the “apology” posted in English on the MVRDV website, which, among other things, claimed that the designers did not “see the resemblance during the design process.”
Then it was in poor taste.
It would be nice if they placed that in the context of why 9/11 crossed his mind and if he was trying to honor the event or mock America.
its a pretty ing stupid design
It's pretty clear from the company's own description of themselves that they are a bunch of socialist liberals celebrating the attack on capitalism. those wooden shoe wearing commie bas s.MVRDV is a global operating architecture and urbanism practice with an progressive ideal engaged in solving global issues.
Looks like it will be a cool place to live though.
