The victim was identified as Erin May Fitzgerald, daughter of The Independent publisher Steve May and stepdaughter of co-publisher Cherry Fisher May.
Police said the altercation occurred after Fitzgerald attempted to remove a banner from Stewart’s parade float, which featured a large cut-out of Cherry Fisher May’s face and a sign that stated “Caution!!! Float Driven by Cherry Fisher May.”
The banner featured Fisher May’s mugshot from her 2010 DWI arrest along with commentary about her arrest, according to a story on the Lafayette weekly newspaper’s website.
Stewart was initially issued a misdemeanor summons for disturbing the peace by fighting at the scene, but the charge was later upgraded when a follow-up investigation found that Stewart knocked Fitzgerald unconscious, Lafayette police Cpl. Paul Mouton said in an email Wednesday.
Stewart’s feud with the newspaper began last year when he was the subject of a series of articles on an agriculture tax loophole.
The newspaper, which is not affiliated with the parade, accused Stewart of taking advantage of the loophole for his Parc Lafayette development at Kaliste Saloom Road and Camellia Boulevard.
In response, Stewart purchased billboard space that displayed Fisher May’s booking mugshot and referred to her arrest.

Hmmm... the lady is holding a pair of scissors. One has to wonder if we are getting the full story.
Well it does say she was trying to remove a banner with her picture on it......
But where does it say that he was her ex?
If you look at the picture, the banner looks pulled, not cut.
If that heffa even swiped the dude just a little with the scissors, he is justified in knocking the beluga out. either way he's going to need a decent lawyer.
