Isn't memorial day just celebrating true veterans, though? Like only people who served during and prior to vietnam?

Memorial Day recognizes soldiers who died in wars.

    RIP
Ah OK, I'm down with that, all soldiers who died in or previous to Vietnam.

If the OP lived in his motherland he'd have to serve in the military. Good thing your family decided to live in America.

I think memorial day should be more about remembering all the innocent iraqi citizens and children who have died than it should be remembering their murderers. It creates a moral dilemma too, because who's to say that these people aren't murderers just because government told them to kill for no good reason? Charles Manson also convinced other people to kill but he's in jail. Is a soldier any different than a hired hitman who we pay to assassinate people for political reasons? Does that make it okay? Still a murder imo. I'd be ashamed if I served in this thing.

my "motherland" is Poland/Russia. Last I checked there isn't mandatory military duty in either country.

My grandfather, who fought in WWII, turns 90 this year. He was pilot stationed in Bari, Italy and in late March of 1944 his P-38 Lightning was intercepted and shot down by Messerschmitt 109 fighters while was he was on a solo weather recon mission to Verona. He bailed out of the plane over Yugoslavia(modern day Croatia) and was helped out by some kids who took him to their village and gave him some food. Then they hooked him up with some people who helped him meet up with other downed pilots who had collected in the town of Delnice. They finally got out after a month long evasion/evacuation and were back stateside in May.

My uncle went to Croatia to research all of this and wound up finding the village where my grandfather was taken to...and amazingly enough...one of the kids who helped him. They also my uncle to a place where a lot of the collected plane parts were located and they found some that matched the serial numbers on my grandfather's plane. He brought some of them back with him to the states for my grandfather to see. It was pretty cool to get to look at them and think about the situation and where they came from.

Thanks Paw Paw. You are a much braver man than I will ever be.

I'm not sure how the military hate started on this forum, but it turns my stomach. Anyone who joins the military and goes to war to do a job the rest of us don't want to do deserves, at least, our appreciation.
