If you watch enough of the history channel you know that Game 6 is actually a rerun. We've seen this one. It's a good day to be the road team.

Once upon a time a franchise much like the Sonics found itself in a hole. Where once they had been a major power in the decades prior some high profile defeats and economic hardship lead to a radical change in management and a rebranding, complete with a new logo. They were new, they were aggressive, they had nothing to lose. They were looking to beat the whole damn world.

And for a little while there it looked like they might. By the time anyone realized how dangerous they had become they had trounced two former championship caliber opponents who themselves were falling on hard times of their own. They had a new territory. They fortified it. They hardened it. Filled it with a combination of zealous patriots and local turncoats who would defend it to the last man. Before long it looked unassailable; like nobody could hope to go in there and fight, much less win. Then a funny thing happened.

An international force did just that. Much of its ranks were young and untested. They were commanded by a grizzled old general who had fought and beaten these guys a generation ago when they were still under their old flag. Some were inspired to fight by a bald man who had been around for so many of these campaigns already (They were also assembled in the homeland of a man considered by many to be a drunk). Some answered the call of a man who had been in charge for so long that many could barely recall a time when he wasn't their leader, crippled and tired though he may be. Some even rallied to the call of a Frenchman who was far less popular than the bald guy and roundly blamed by many for the situation they were up against.

On June 6, 1944 the free people of the world came together in an unprecedented show of force and struck the tide turning blow in an epic strugggle. When it was all said and done men from far flung corners of the globe had stood as one and proclaimed to the those who would oppress it:

"The Spurs entered Game 6 without the infrastructure and logistical support necessary to win. To overcome this deficit, Spurs players worked around the clock. Greggory Popovich chief of the Spurs Franchise, said, "The Spurs Game 6 win was probably the greatest collective achievement of all time."

After checking the History Channel's website I may have read the omens wrong. A June 6th was both the end of an era (last episode of Ed Sullivan Show after 23 seasons, 1971) and the start of a new one (premiere of Sex and the City, 1998).
