Let's have this one for the smaller sports (soccer and basketball will have its own threads anyway) and all the stuff happening next to the courts, lanes, pools ect.

Comparing the opening ceremonies, which one did you like more Beijing or London?

Just saw the Beijing one yesterday and then the London one too, and I have to say: Beijing was 1000% better!!!

Some may say: "Oh, London had so much more heart." or "Bigger isn't always better.", but London turned a monumental effort into something that felt like watching a boring disco party (that middle "music"-part was nice for about 2 songs before just taking to much time...and I really tried to see some nice stuff from the dancers but either they hadn't have any, there where to few of them or they just where lacking some real lightsuits as they got lost in the dark).

Furthermore the video clips really skrewed it up, especially because sometimes you didn't even know if it is live or just another tape (what about the boat with Beckham?...pretaped?...And how can you skrew the day/night thing with Bond up? :/ ).

Not saying it wasn't nice to follow, but I want 2008 simultaneous drums and firework footsteps and not a f***in' Mary Poppins army letting the air out of Voldemor or this...
    .

Not sure about other former ceremonies but I'd rather watch 2008 three times in a row than watching 2012 once again.

...Womens Beachvolleyball on right now...Not that much into Asians but these two Chinese look hot!

btw.: I'm ok with the teenagers lighting the gauldron...but it was funny with all the hype of who is going to do it.

Commentator: "Lets see who they give the fire to and who is lighting the gauldron...So much speculation...Only moments to go and we will see who is doing it...Uuh wait, THEY are lighting it!"

As far as the opening ceremony goes, I thought it was alright. I mean you have to realize that for China the opening ceremony was a big political statement that was intended to shape their international vision of how they want the world to view their country. The only thing I really disliked in the London opening was that the procession was very rushed...although it was nice for time reasons, I wanted more time to be spent on each of the nations participating.

Also, much needs to be said about the power of the Olympics and the opening ceremonies. You have the world's stage to educate the world of your nations history, beliefs and behaviors. Whether or not nations like North Korea get to even see an unedited version of the opening ceremony is beyond me, but nevertheless it can be a powerful tool.

It makes you wonder what athletes participating in the Olympics from certain non-democratic/non-western societies think when they travel to a place like London to compete. They must see the vast wealth of the UK in awe. Imagine for example what someone from North Korea must feel, or Cuba for that matter.

We may concern ourselves with the true value of our society and the US dollar, but there is no mistake that democracy has brought stability and wealth to the masses.

BTW the fact that everything is being streamed live online is so awesome. I've watched every event I could so far today.

My favorite part of the Olympics is watching sports that usually don't get much media attention or live transmissions. I often pleasantly surprised - much more than by the "main" sports.

Has anybody watched the road cycling race? The British dominance of the Tour put them in a position where everybody was against them. It was funny to see how team after team attacked the British, while refusing to do anything that might help them.

There's no doubt in my mind that the English team is by far the strongest one, but everybody else's tactics where against them and they executed to perfection. Probably the most entertaining Olympic bike road race ever.

Why is getting on a horse in a blazer and a top hat considered an olympic sport?

Can we have NASCAR come to the Olympics next? Or maybe COD deathmatch?

For those outside the U.S. or without cable, may want to read this:

    http://gizmodo.com/5928992/how-to-wa...f-the-olympics

Basically you can use a proxy service that is in the UK and stream the Olympics from the BBC website.

yeh to make even more sense of it, think about the fact that they won't accept American Baseball or American Football as an Olympic sport, yet Equestrianism accepted? wtf

Congrats to Lochte. He was busting his ass for four years while Phelps was relaxing/smoking weed.
