Balotelli quizzed over Mafia links
September 8, 2011
Mario Balotelli's turbulent Manchester City career has taken another unsteady turn with the striker ordered by Italian police to explain his links to the country's Mafia.
Balotelli, who has courted controversy since making a £24 million switch from Inter Milan last summer, has been called as a witness by prosecutors in Naples for an anti-Mafia investigation that is going to trial next week.
The forward was given a guided tour of a notorious crime-ridden district of Naples by Mario Iorio, a catering entrepreneur who has been charged with money laundering as part of an ongoing crime investigation. Balotelli will face stiff questioning on his links to Iorio and regarding his visit to the Scampia area when he appears before prosecutors on September 15.
"There is nothing to worry about. I am calm. I had no idea who the people were showing me around Scampia," Balotelli said when asked about the court visit.
"That day there were loads of people around me. I'm sad the effect this may have on my family. I just wanted to see what the area was like as I had seen it in the film Gomorrah."

Two fire engines were sent to the home of Italy international Balotelli in Mottram St Andrew, Macclesfield, in the early hours of Saturday morning after the alarm was raised. They found a fire in the bathroom on the first floor of the detached property.
Four firefighters arrived wearing breathing apparatus and used two hose reel water jets to douse the flames, and a large fan was deployed to clear smoke.
A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews managed to put the fire out within half an hour of arriving but remained at the scene until 2.45am to prevent any possible flare-ups.
"Smoke alarms were fitted at the property and the occupiers were able to get out unharmed. The fire was caused by a firework.''
The cause of the blaze is being examined by fire investigators and police but is not being treated as su ious.

Mario Balotelli's penchant for eccentric behaviour continued on Thursday when the Manchester City striker walked into a local college and asked a student where the toilets were located.
Balotelli, who featured in City's Carling Cup tie with Liverpool on Wednesday evening, parked his Bentley outside Xaverian College at around 1.30pm before walking into the canteen and making the inquiry.
After using the facilities the 21-year-old Italy international went into the staff room to speak to teachers before spending 20 minutes walking round the college campus accompanied by students.
Eighteen-year-old Edward Gasson was sitting in the canteen when Balotelli arrived out of the blue. "Balotelli parked his Bentley outside, then came in and was asking where the toilets were, then he went to the teachers' staff room," he told the Manchester Evening News.
"After that he was just walking round campus like he owned the place and everyone was following him around.
"I'm a City fan so it was amazing to see him but it was a bit ridiculous for him to come here – you would never expect it to happen."
A spokesperson for the Catholic college said: "Xaverian was delighted to receive a surprise visit from Mario, who chatted to some of the students at one of Manchester's most successful colleges.
"We weren't able to enrol him on any courses but he is welcome back anytime."
This is not the first occasion Balotelli has drawn attention for controversial behaviour. In 2010 he drove through an open security gate at a women's prison in Italy to look around, while in October he set his house on fire after letting off fireworks in his bathroom.
He also visited a school in Manchester last year to confront a youth about bullying a fellow pupil.
I think thats cool.
Why would it be controversial?
If a man stoping to a leak doesn't outrage you, I don't know what will!
Whatever he does is going to be blown out of proportion. I'd feel sorry for him if it wasn't for the millions of £ and Bentleys he's got.
It isn't controversial, it is just something that famous people don't do.

wtf are you guys hating on balotelli? He's hilarious.
Yeah - the article implied it was controversial but the Brits use their language differently than we do (ie cynical) so maybe thats it. Or maybe the article was written by an idiot. Either way, I think it was cool.
It's the Guardian, so yeah.
