o, this is my first posted thread.. I'm Charmaine from Philippines.. It's just that I have this question and it always pops out of my mind everytime I hear someone praising Manu (no offense meant Ginobili Fans.. ) more than Timmy.. Why do most people praise Manu (or anyone else for that matter) without acknowledging Timmy's contributions to the team? They always say: "Bano naman yan si Tim Duncan eh." (Tim Duncan stinks!) I always get frustrated with those people! Please answer my question fellow Spurs fan.. THANKS..

There are many Manu fans here but most people in here like TD too.
Most people in here KNOW what TD means to this team. I don't know where you're coming from or if I understood your question correctly.

Welcome to the board. My family is from butuan city. what city do you live in?

I dont know how it is over in the philippines, but manu is a lot more exciting player which might lead to people often overlooking timmy. but all spurs fans know that timmy is the man in S.A. Without him things just wouldn't work. Next time somene talks bad about Timmy tell them they don't know anything about basketball.

    Why?
    well they are noticing Tim
they are noticing him as a borin unsuperstar. You shuold know that.

Manu? The thing with manu is that he can do the plastic things , and more important thet people see that passion to the game in him. Tim has a passion , strong passion but not everybody sees it. He more keeps it inside him
    (intovertic? - in English?????)

The thing that pains me the most is that, not only they don't appreciate what Timmy does for the team, they even say bad things about him!!

Charmie, welcome! I am an avid Duncan supporter and hype him like I used to David Robinson. I always felt Robinson deserved more recognition and Duncan is sort of in the same mold. Deep down, though, no basketball critic can deny Duncan's greatness. But in an age of highlight reel dunks and mass marketing, Duncan chooses to be less accessible, hence not very marketable. Duncan is great, but he chooses to deflect the love to his teammates. That's what makes him special to the chosen few truly knowledgeable and appreciative basketball fans.

In conclusion, you are right. The superstar always takes the hits when the ship sails off course. But Duncan sort of compounds the criticsm by refusing to partake in the mass hype crap. That's something I really admire in him.

TD is one of the quietest players in the history of the NBA. Sometimes TD scores 25pts and 15rbs and you seriously wonder how he was so productive. Manu is also quiet but a lot people know him for his flashy and dazzling plays. Maybe TD doesn't provide excitment to some people. I don't know.

I love watching TD play as much any player in the league. I know people in this forum respect what he provides for the spurs. People that say he stinks like you say don't know basketball and how it should be played. I mean Duncan is only one of the greatest NBA players of all time.

Hi Charmie! Im an avid fan of Duncan here in the Philippines.I always have a debate with our countryman with regards to Duncans style of playing. I enjoyed watching Duncans moves rather than Vince Carters game(maybe its just me).The basic and fundamental basketball is a joy to watch(for me).

P.S Nice to see Filipinos here in spurstalk...maybe next year we could have a GTG in finals...(i hope so)...anyway im in Parańaque...keep posting...

I've been wondering about this myself and if it bothers Tim at all that some are now calling the Spurs, "Manu's Team". I don't think it bothers Tim at all.

That is just the way he wants it. Him and Steve Nash are the same in that way.

Steve is always about the team first. At least it appears that way to me.

Nope, its still a Tim Duncan's team(Tim's team), Duncan is the heart and soul of the spurs...no doubt...but Tim Duncan is a team player so its no big deal for him if spurs is his team or Manu....all he cares about is WINNING!...

hey there! aside from duncanoypi.. theres another filipino poster here!

whats up charmie? im from quezon city.

to answer your question, its most likely in the way he plays. he was never (and i dont think he will never be) the showtime player like other player is.

not discounting anything from TD. hes the best. but his showmanship just isnt.

anyway.. id rather see him helping the team win than making those lame pushups.

Tim doesn't promote himself, like so many nba players, and he doesn't do any national commercials (that I've seen). I've never even seen him in print ads. The only commercials I've ever seen him in are H.E.B. spots (a Texas Grocery store chain). I think this speaks volumes of Tim Duncan. He is the anti-Shaq, anti-Kobe, anti-Jordan. He is secure in himself and doesn't need the attention of the nation. He could double his earnings by being a little flashy, throwing out soundbites, and getting all those Nike commercials, but he doesn't. He rejects the hype, superficiality and commercialism that invades so many sports. This is what I love about him.

    Welcome Charmaine!
I'm a big Manu fan, but I can't say as I've heard anyone refer to the Spurs as "Manu's team". I don't doubt that there are those that do, but I certainly wouldn't be one of them. The Spurs have been Timmy's team since David Robinson retired, and even a little before then, and it will be continue to be his team til he passes the torch. There are definitely players in the league, whose popularity has grown, as Manu's has, who would enjoy challenging their team's leader for the starring role, but Manu is not one them.

As for the cheering at the SBC Center, I'm not sure what you are hearing, but Timmy and Manu both get a huge cheer from the crowd when introduced.

I'm another avid Timmy fan here. I don't consider Tim or his game boring at all and I tend to really like people with Tim's perosnality (or the personality that he projects to the public.) I know what you mean about people taking Duncan for granted. I do think that Manu has more fans (due to the personality that he projects), but almost none of them will say that he is a better basketball player then Tim is or that it's his team. People (and not nececerily Spurs fans) put Tim as being possibly one of the greatest players of all time and the greates power forward. I'm not saying that it doesn't bother me that Manu is more popular then Tim (I think that Tony used to be more popular too in the first year or so) but it has more to do with personality rather then basketball skill and nobody questions who's the more skilled player. for those poster from the Philippines, what is the sentiment in that country about the Spurs and the individual players on the Spurs?

look the reason right now manu has more in fans in san antonio is very simple.

Tim Duncan is not ur average superstar, and san antonio has all ways stayed with him,

actin like they wouldnt have it any other way,cuz they are stuck with. But thats

been bull plop, they only do it cuz they dont want him to feel underappreciated and

leave. But now that they finally have a player people consider interestin, the san

antonio people have shown themselves to be like everybody else. they want the

razzle dazzle just as much as everybody else.

Timmy will always be San Antonio's most loved player.
A main reason a lot of people are huge fans of Manu in SA is because he's hispanic/spanish-speaking, and the majority here are hispanic too. Don't you think?

It's a good thing Manu doesn't have an ego; if he ever tried to make the Spurs "his" team, I would hate him.

    But he doesn't, so I don't.

No. You're wrong. Razzle Dazzle is Shaq, Jordan, Magic and Kobe. Manu is not razzle dazzle at all. What he is is passionate and emotive. People just love his energy. He's a great player to watch on the court, but he's not flashy is his personal life - that's the big difference between him and the players I just mentioned. The spurs don't even dress like stars, you only ever see them in shorts and T-shirts. Never any bling on any of them. Tony Parker, on the other hand, might be considered a bit flashy in his personal life, and fans really don't like that aspect of him. If San Antonians like razzle dazzle we would have taken a better liking to Denis Rodman, but he was pretty unpopular here.

Manu is "razzle dazzle" in the mold of those players. He's a great player whose game is fun for casual fans to watch. Then there are great players whose game is not exciting to the casual fan. McHale, Zeke, Jabbar and TD come to mind.

Appreciation of TD's game is a litmus test to determine whether someone is a casual fan or not.
