Theres pleanty of skeletons in the closet in terms of horry love hate at the start of this very season....
I remember reading post after post about why did Pop get Horry, and I remember when he had 4 points a game how many in here wanted him gone.
Funny how a few 3 point baskets at the right time changes all that. I hope you guys keep that in mind next time you question Pop and the Spurs on who they get this summer.
Theres pleanty of skeletons in the closet in terms of horry love hate at the start of this very season....
i started to love Robert Horry the moment he missed that 3 pointer against the Spurs in game 5 2003. Ironically the same exact 3 pointer that he made in game 5 against Detroit in the same exact spot.
I never hated Horry. Even when he was on the Lakers. I just felt bad for him being on such an a**hole team. Of course I hated when he made good shots against us. But I never felt like he belonged on the Lakers.
I hated him when he got Dave in the nuts.
Never actually hated him...did have some dislike for him when he played for the Lakers. I always liked him when he was at Houston. I think the reason I didn't care for him when he played for the Lakers is just the taint of being a Lake-uh. I was afraid he'd go "hollywood" like the rest of those bozos. He didn't, though, and that became evident when he came to the Spurs. I have liked him since the day he signed on, but I have to admit my admiration grew considerably this season.
I had a mild disdain for Steve Kerr, too, when he first came to the Spurs, because he used to be a Bull, and that was my second-most-hated team for years. I got over that, too, and Stevie became one of my favorites (long before he started hitting 3-pointers in the playoffs). Didn't care for Steve Smith, either, because he was a Trailgangsta; got over that, too, and I still follow his career to this day.
I don't think it's out of the ordinary to gain respect and affection for players you don't know as you get to know them better. I think it's only human. And, I think to question that, or condemn it, is silly and trivial.
As for doubting or questioning Pop and his decisions, I may not like everything he does, and I may not agree with all of it. But, I never question his motives; I KNOW (without a shadow of a doubt) that he is doing what he believes in his gut is right for, and in the best interest of, the team. And, DANG, if it doesn't work out to BE the best thing for the team about 98%of the time (even HE admits he's made a couple of miscalculations, but that's how you learn).
Ooh I dug up some examples...
Another question was possed: Horry or Malone?
Yep, the Horry hate at the start of the season was in full swing luckily I'm sure the fore mentioned are on the bandwagon for good now.
Malik > Horry![]()
Are you kidding me? He was the hand of the devil himself when he was in Houston.I always liked him when he was at Houston.
I got over all the shots he made against the Spurs when it became public knowledge that Horry was given his walking papers from the Lakers. I knew right then that we had to get this guy.
I couldn't stand him when he was a Rocket or Laker. Now I freaking love the guy thanks to the Father's Day Game 5 Bomb. Plus I met him at a homeowner's association and he seems to be a cool cat.
i remember the hate. i think i would have remembered it VERY well had he gone to miami.
it took me til the beginning of his 2nd season here for me to let it go....big shots or not, he hustles and he'd dive for loose balls, and blocked some big shots for us. that shows desire and heart and it's hard not to like that when they do it for the team you root for...
he's a spur now. i hope he gets #7 and #8 here.
EXACTLY! I hated what he was doing (when it was against the Spurs), but I loved the way he did it (hand of the devil and all). He was magnificent in a horrible way (when he was executing against the Spurs - against anyone else, I didn't care). Kind of like a car wreck...you can't help but look, even when you cover your eyes, you have to watch him between your fingers, LOL.
And, I realize now, that Horry was NEVER comfortable when he was playing for the Lakers. I read all that crap on here yesterday about him being Shaq's (bull !)...what a bunch of horse puckey. He always struck me as a "fish out of water" when he was out there. Now I know what I was seeing, he just didn't like it. He's made too many remarks lately about being "on a real team now" for me to think he liked being a Laker, that is NOT a team, it's a gang (and even Shaq knows that, now).
I thought the same thing when the Lakers let him go. How stupid do you think Jerry Buss feels NOW?
^ I very nearly quoted you bigzak![]()
Good to see many here man up , and say what they really said back when they said it,
after all at one time when I was a Spurs fan I said I wanted Pop gone also.
To this day I can't seem to find anyone else who will admit they wanted Pop gone at one time or another,
Anyone here remember when many wanted David Robinson off the team?
I never hated Horry until his last 2 years with the Lakers...
I wanted him on my team for just about his entire career...
I started to dislike him at the end of his Laker Run because of 2 things...and they had nothing to do with his clutchness, which I always admired...
In the 02 playoffs he shoved Tony in the back under the basket when Tony was running full speed at the basket...it was kind of a cheap shot on a rookie and the only one I had ever seen him take up to that point in his career.
In the 03 playoffs he pissed me off when he hit Drob in the nuts...but I think that probably was on accident. Drob seemed to get over it pretty quickly.
None of those things were big deals though...I always loved his clutchness and covted it for my team...I was very happy when the Spurs signed him originally.
He's not like Malone...he's never been the head or thug that Malone was...all he did was beat you with gutsy shots and plays...how can you hate that?
mouse, I wanted Pop gone, along with most of San Antonio, back in 1999 when the Spurs started slowly and Pop was seemingly unaccountable to the public for the Spurs' lackluster start to that lockout-shortened season. I called the Charlie Parker show and ranted about it on the air.
Now, three championships later, many fans appreciate Pop's at times sarcastic demeanor. I also criticized Pop heavily after the Lakers pounded the seemingly unmotivated Spurs in the 2001 Western Conference Semis. To me, it seemed he could not motivate his team. Two les later, I guess you just have to say the Lakers were that great!
I have already posted my mea culpa regarding my hypocritcal stance on Robert Horry.
I hated his guts before he signed with the Spurs. Now I love him, absolutely love him! Finding out that he was humble and loved toplay basketball was icing on the cake. Finding out he re-signed because he loves the Spurs organization is even better.
Of course we hated him he was a Laker. Now he is certified Spur and we love him. I also agree with big Zak it took a while for the hate to go away at first.

If I had ever said I wanted Pop gone, I would admit it. Actually, I may have said it once during the first season he coached here, but I never said it here. But, since I'm a relative newbie here, I know you aren't talking to me.
Yep, I wanted him gone every time he acted like a big baby girl the last couple of seasons he played...and every time he left his brain at home when he came to a game...every time Tim Duncan was dragging his ass up and down the court in the finals in 2003...right up until the time he was standing there with the best biceps in the NBA (at the time) holding up the trophy and flashing that million dollar smile...yep...quite a few times I wanted him gone, right up 'til that moment.![]()
I never hated Horry. I hated all the damn Lakers except Horry and Fisher.
pale face spur fans turn thier pale face backs on avery johnson, him little general him make tonto proud still.
He's to cute and talented to be hated. He did make me sick when helped eliminate us though. You know the kinda guy you'd like to have on your team. Thank God we get to keep him a few more years. Don't be a hater!!!! Life's too short.
never wanted Pop gone, I have always loved defensive minded coaches
only hated Robert when he played for the Rockets in 95
only disliked Robert when he sucked ass against Lakers in 04 playoffs
always thought Phil burnt out Horry during 03 season, but never understood why Horry faded in 04
I really liked the idea of Robert being a Spur when he signed with us back in 03 (even though my wife hated him as a Laker).
I apologize to Horry for hating him but I love him now.
Not me. I still love Avery. I felt worse when they let Avery go than I did when they traded Malik (and that's BAD). I will always love Avery and what he did for this team (more than just on the court). He's a true leader and I wish him well (but not his team). I hope he gets the respect in the league he deserves as a coach and a leader.
AJ got his big payday in Denver... don't feel bad for him. I don't understand the hate for him from some in the forum.
