    They called his bluff.

I think this is freakin hilarious.

The Republican governor put forth a budget proposal. The Democratic leaders said "OK, lets bring it to a vote".
Shockingly, the stringently partisan plan fails spectacularly, when the house republicans run away from their own party's priorities, because they know it is a toxic stew.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner's plan to slash healthcare spending in the upcoming state budget failed to attract a single affirmative vote in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The bill amendment was the first major piece of the Republican governor's $32 billion, fiscal 2016 general funds budget, which relies on $6.6 billion in spending cuts, to come up for a legislative vote.

The human services budget totaling $11.1 billion, a $1.2 billion decrease from current appropriations, failed in a 0-67 vote.

Republican legislators voted "present" to protest the fact the amendment was not vetted by appropriate House committees and was instead sent directly to the chamber's floor by powerful Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. Madigan said he offered the legislation to facilitate legislative consideration of the governor's budget.

State Representative Greg Harris, a Democrat, said committees have heard hours of testimony from social service agencies and others since Rauner unveiled his budget in February.

"It is not a mystery what is in this bill," Harris said.

House Democrats subsequently passed a bill amendment that restores funding to some programs, as Republicans continued to vote "present." Votes on more amendments were expected to follow.

Rauner's office said there was no time for "political stunts."

"Governor Rauner stands ready to work with Democrats to pass real structural changes to our government and enact a balanced budget," his office said in a statement. "Rather than engaging in political theater, we ask Democrats to meet the governor at the negotiating table and help turn our state around."

The state's fiscal year begins on July 1 and budget bills will require a three-fifths legislative vote after May 31. Rauner has ruled out any revenue increases without reforms that include right-to-work zones, a local property tax freeze, pension cuts, and legislative term limits.

Illinois has a chronic structural budget deficit, as well as the lowest credit ratings and worst-funded pension system among the 50 states. The fiscal crisis is the most severe the state has seen in decades, according to budget experts. Rauner has said reforms must precede new revenue.

A $26 million cut in the current state budget to social service programs ordered by Rauner in April was reversed after a groundswell of protests.

Says something about the disconnect between what the GOP thinks is ideal, and what they are willing to be on record voting for, IMO.

The picture portrayed may or may not be accurate. Nobody in their right mind you straight up vote for a governors proposal, especially one as large as a budget. Seems to me it's the democrats plying the games, but maybe your take is correct.

I must say and will be surprised if you disagree that this has merit:

Republican legislators voted "present" to protest the fact the amendment was not vetted by appropriate House committees and was instead sent directly to the chamber's floor by powerful Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Afterall, look at the traction they are getting with this stunt...

    Well...

If you think a governors proposal is more than just a rough outline...

    Wow...

Budgets are vision statements, opening gambits if you will. It is unusual that a proposal makes it to the floor, but I am ing thrilled that Democrats are finding their spine, and calling the GOP on the stupidity of their policy positions.

Maybe the Republican governor could propose something less extreme, and find some bit of compromise with the opposing party. The problem is that being seen as willing to compromise is not what gets you through a GOP primary.

I don't see that changing any time soon. The noise out of Fox "news" and similar is anything but conciliatory.

Just shows that playing politics is more important to both sides, than serving the people. They value money and power over what they were elected to do. Both sides...

    To be clear;

Both sides are "playing games" here. It is theater of the political sort.

I just find it funny, because it highlights just how out of touch Republican priorities are.

I beg to differ. The GOP sold its soul a long time ago. It is the party of rich white guys, by rich white guys, and for rich white guys, tokens notwithstanding.

Democrats have had to suck up to rich people to compete to some degree, but you can't tell me that the average Democratic politician shamelessly panders to rich people to anywhere near the degree that Republicans do.

REF: "death tax" "job creators" et al.

    Do you really believe that?

If I take the top 100 all time donors, liberals and democrats get 63.84% to the republicans and conservatives 34.08%.

If I take the top 50 donors for the 2014 election cycle, 71.62 went to democrats and liberals, and only 19.63% to republicans and conservatives.

And yet, top Democrats aren't supporting repealing the estate tax. Why is that?

After 8 years of the Repug Reign of Error, people gave heavily to Obama, even Wall St knew whom to give to.

Wall St flipped and gave 10:1 to Bishop Gecko in 2012.

what about the secret, untraceable VRWC spending through the right-wing fraudulent "social welfare" orgs?

FEC just said yesterday that even the ty, weak FEC spending regs are totally unenforceable.

    American politics is 100% corrupt.

America is ed and un able as a plutocratic, kleptocratic oligarchy.

The coup de grace will be TPP and TTIP passing through untouched, promoting capital sovereignty and corporate sovereignty above national sovereignty.
