I don't know all the facts of the story, but why should Karl Malone try to be like a father/give his "son" money? He doesn't know the kid, and never met him til he was basically an adult. Malone was a 19 year old trying to get his wet (even with a 13 yr old, right or wrong) and I'm sure if given the chance he would've had the kid aborted, and the mom should've aborted the kid anyways since being a mom @ 13 is just ridiculous. I'm not saying you shouldn't have to pay the consequences of knocking a girl up, but it was 18 years too late to do anything about it.
If I was that kid, I wouldn't want anything to do with my dad if he wasn't around during my youth. His ONLY reason for even meeting/developing a relationship with Malone would be to get money from him and I'm sure The Mailman is smart enough to see past that.
