The Grizz defenders should never be outside the three point line on Tony or Ginobili. When teams turn up their focus on stopping Tony or Manu, defenders tend to have the on ball defender focused and guarding the ball. Sure they may go under the screen on a pick, but that's not the problem. The problem is the defenders are guarding Tony and Manu out at half court. What happens is Tim or Splitter sets the pick 35 ft from the hoop and coming off of that pick, the Spurs have a ton of space if they don't trap. And if they do, the Spurs find the roll man playing 4 on 3 with 2 of the Grizz defenders standing way beyond the 3.

Seriously, force Tony or Manu to score 70 points between them shooting 18 to 23 feet jumpers from the top of the key. Don't let yourself be picked anywhere beyond 18 feet. This way, all 5 defenders are jamming the scoreable areas of the court rather than having 1 sometimes 2 defenders left in the middle of nowhere above the 3 point line. If you stand at the free throw line even if Tony/ Manu is at half court, then Tiago is forced to pick you in the key or Tony/ Manu is just forced to shoot. This way, your help defenders don't need to help off the 3 point line either since Tony/Manu won't have such a head of steam running into the key from all the way out coming off a pick.

If Conley/Allen just stands a step inside the free throw line, I don't know how Tony Parker gets layups and I don't know how the Spurs create anything off of a pick and roll/pop. You eliminate the wing and corner three. And you eliminate ball movement. What you do give up and what you'll live with is Tony and Manu taking a dribble in 18 footer / 3 pointer from the top of the key all game.

Manu especially does this in late clock situations where he cuts up the key and catches it 40 feet away from the hoop and that's where Tiago comes to do pick and roll. If Manu's defender just stays at the FT line, there is nothing Manu can do except take a top of the key 3. You live with that.

Advanced stats will tell you in a couple of years as you kids learn, that having any defender in an area of the court that is not a threat is re ed. This whole get up on the ball, get in his grill is stupid outside of a player's shootable range. No reason any defender of Tony Parker's should have their feet outside the 3 point line at any point of any possession. Doesn't' matter if he's cutting, or if he's standing way out at half court.

HOW NOT TO GUARD THE SPURS: This is what I'm talking about.

nba players can shoot open shots all day. Its silly to give someone that much space because they can stop on a dime and drill it in rhythm. The reason they don't is because of the man that is guarding him all the way outside the three point line. Plus if no one was guarding them that far out, you wouldnt even see a pick, they would just pick up a head of steam, stop on a dime or get past the waiting defender w/o any trouble.

How to stop the Spurs Offense:

Step #1: Insert whistle into mouth
    Step #2: Blow

Not sure what the Grizz can do, but the refs have it down pat.

    This.

3 fouls on Duncan in 30 seconds to make him sit. Another foul on Duncan in barely over 1 minute when he comes back to make him sit again.

Recipe for Grizzlies' success. Gasol tried flopping 2-3 times early in game 1 when defended by Duncan (wasn't even getting fouled), but refs didn't call them. Game 2 they went back to the flop and it worked.

So I expect more flopping by the Grizz in game 3, especially when Duncan is defending. It will be their go-to move.

It seems the only way to stop the Spurs offense is to let them get up by 15.

If we play Mima, they'll just stick Lebron on Tony and the Spurs will be screwed.

If the defender just stands right outside the FT line then they'll be in no man's land and Parker or Ginobili will have a full run at them which will be a layup or foul every time since you have the wing defenders staying hard on the shooters. Seriously, if they tried that Pop would just have Splitter/Bonner/TD/Diaw clear out to the 3 line removing their man from the lane and let Parker/Ginobili go one on one on a guy standing at the free throw line. It's be murder on any defender.

They couldn't stand inside the free throw line as it would be defensive 3 seconds in the lane. You didn't really think that one through did you?
