It would seems that the Spurs would rather have International players than American ones in the AAU circuit.

Decades later, with Pop's mentality and some luck, the core of the Spurs -- Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, international players all -- have helped produce the most consistent winner in the four major sports over the past 15 years, victorious 70.3 percent of the time during that stretch. They've reached the NBA Finals five times and, as of June 10, were three wins away from a fifth championship. And through it all, as Pop's international strategy has become the strategy in the NBA -- seven GMs and five head coaches this past season grew from the Spurs' tree -- it's always been framed in Moneyball terms: Go somewhere other teams aren't, find talent nobody else finds. But to spend time inside the Spurs organization today is to uncover another interpretation of the Spurs dynasty: that as America's youth basketball pipeline has produced a type of player that Pop has no interest in coaching, he has found an advantage not only in targeting international players but in avoiding domestic ones.

Kawhi Leonard, and Danny Green say "hi"... Pop will coach and DEVELOP domestic players if they have the right at ude... throw George Hill into that mix even if he is no longer a member of the Spurs....

Yes, because when they were led by a Navy veteran and all American great guy they were media darlings.

That's such bull because the Spurs didnt get respect when they were almost all American born players. It's the small market and how the NBA chose to market individuals over teams. It's why the NFL who markets teams over individuals kick the NBA's ass every day of the week and have a super small market team like GB with a huge following

Of all reasons why the Spurs aren't particularly liked, their selection of international players is probably one of the LEAST of those reasons.

It's like I said before, Nationalism is a reason why the Spurs don't get much love...
Naw, I think it comes down to the fact that the Spurs embody a pathos that is diametrically opposed to the Extrovert Ideal that has been fetishized by American business for the last 100 years. It might seem weird to think of it in psychological terms, but think about it, Duncan is an introvert, Pop is an introvert, RC is an introvert, the entire Spurs organization is built on the Introvert ideal. Business has no idea what to do with that, as it involves a completely different set of ideals and perspective than what they know how to sell. Therefore they're content to just dismiss and minimize the Spurs, except for those times where they can't be ignored because they're in the finals.

Who cares though? how they're perceived, just more reason to like them as a fan. All their success, from that point of view, is a big you to the status quo.

    Agreed...but hey, it's out there.
But the Introvert pathos you talk about is exactly the way it is with the New England Patriots, except for the fact that Brady is a bankable TV commodity. But the organization itself handles things the way the Spurs do. Watch Bill Bellicheck's conference today and when they asked about Tebow...handled the same way Pop handles it.

As for the 4 Letter, They would rather talk Tim Tebow than Game 3 of the NBA Finals. I guarantee that if it was OKC against MIA again, they wouldn't talk Tim Tebow.

Nationalism exists in America people. That's the very same reason that Hollywood thought that Bruce Lee couldn't attract large audiences and only figured it our AFTER he died.

Open your got damn eyes. I'll party it up when the Spurs win the Finals this year, but I won't be surprised when the Spurs are PLACED just north of Old & Boring by the media mouthpiece that is the 4Letter when next season arrives.

    Hey Beaverfuzz...GFY!

Actually the real reason why the Spurs are never talked about on national TV is this :

It's not whether the players are international or not, it's whether "they've gotten over themselves." I read (somewhere) that Danny Green got cut twice, phoned and left Pop a voicemail begging him to give him a second chance, that he would be the water boy, wave towels, do whatever Pop wanted. In the story, DG was so grateful that Pop gave him that second chance and that here he is - a starter on a team in the Finals - a dream come true.

I wouldn't say it's an introvert thing because Manu and Bowen definitely aren't introverts. Bowen was from the school of hard knocks and KL - well, his dad was murdered - that kinda thing makes you mature quickly and not take things for granted. I do agree that the international players tend to have a more "team" (instead of individual) at ude.

    I understand Pop's feeling.

Some of the worst coaches are these AAU guys that are like leeches and gravitate towards talented players and don't teach them squat. The Euros are already familiar with academies from soccer. They teach fundamentals. There is a wealth of talented kids who are told how good they are that go from AAU team to AAU team just to hear what college their new coach can get them into. There are some very good coaches with the kids welfare in mind that actually try to teach, but most are parents that don't know squat and undergo minimal training.

    AAU needs bigtime reforming.
