Other than Sweet Jane & Take a walk on the wild side I did not know anything about Lou Reed so I looked up his WIKI page. As a teenager he underwent forced shock therapy to cure him of his gay lifestyle.
Reed, who was bisexual, received electroconvulsive therapy as a teenager, which was intended to cure his bisexuality; he wrote about the experience in his 1974 song, "Kill Your Sons."In an interview, Reed said of the experience: "They put the thing down your throat so you don't swallow your tongue, and they put electrodes on your head. That's what was recommended in Rockland County to discourage sexual feelings. The effect is that you lose your memory and become a vegetable. You can't read a book because you get to page 17 and have to go right back to page one again." That is Messed up”

Saw Lou Reed at the Austin City Music Hall when I was 16. Got lucky and got an autograph from Krist Noveslik. RIP
Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground informed my musical tastes more than any one artist. He originated the music that would influence my favorite bands. Lou Reed changed my life. The phrase gets overused, but he really was a true original.

He's been really ill since May. He probably wanted to set up his family. Just a guess.
I watched that performance of Berlin from 2007 last night. Incredible.
I was gonna see Kronos Quartet with Laurie Anderson a couple of weeks ago in Austin but it was cancelled. Now it makes sense. She was married to him, of course.
As a kid I would play the chords to Sweet Jane not even knowing who it was by until years later. I would read about LR and the whole NY scene in Creem magazine in high school. RIP Lou.
Great record. One of the most underrated Lou Reed albums in my opinion is Set the Twilight Reeling. Magic and Loss also never got its due praise, as far as I see.
I really liked Set the Twilight Reeling as well. I thought I might be the only one. Magic and Loss, if iirc, was pretty well received critically.
