If you like war/soldier stuff, one of my husband's favorite books is Steel My Soldiers' Hearts. I've never read it, but he says it's very good. I think it's non-fiction.

I was in the Marine Corps in the early 90's. I know, some of my tastes lean that way.

A Separate Peace, by John Knowles-

the topic is a bit juvenile, but I love Knowles's writing style

The Last Season, by Phil Jackson-

a mandatory read for any NBA fan. The book, filled with the expected Jackson propoganda, does nothing for me. But I love the approach in do enting an entire season like that.

It's Not About the Bike, by Lance Armstrong-

I finished this in two days. Being a long distance runner myself, I can relate to why he loves to bike. And I even see a lot of myself in how he described his pre-cancer approach to racing, and living. But his story of survival, and his comeback, is unmatched. His desire to keep living, to keep being the absolute best he can be, is unmatched. "As long as I can move, I am still alive."

    Everyone Poops, by Taro Gomi-

Because it's a children's book, and it is funny as ! (no pun intended)

Belligerence and Debauchery: the Tucker Max Stories, by Tucker Max

This guy basically goes around, gets drunk, and writes about it. Or better yet, let's use his description:

My name is Tucker Max, and I am an asshole.

I get excessively drunk at inappropriate times, disregard social norms, indulge every whim, ignore the consequences of my actions, mock idiots and posers, sleep with more women than is safe or reasonable, and just generally act like a raging head.

But, I do contribute to humanity in one very important way.

I share my adventures with the world.

Oscar "Zeta" Acosta goes along those same lines. Actually, he is Hunter's Dr Gonzo in Fear and Loathing.

oh, I didn't know that and I actually heard an interview of Oscar on the radio recently. He didn't talk about his own books, just about Hunter. Shame about him killing himself this year.

Oh damn, I cannot believe I forgot about this guy! David Sedaris is my god. Albeit an openly gay, and possibly OCD god.

Me Talk Pretty One Day is a collection of true stories from David Sedaris's childhood, and some of his adult life. The writing style, the word choice, and the content delivery is to perfection.

And Dave Barry's best book, in my opinion, Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys

Oscar has been missing since 1974. When was this interview recorded?? Don't feel bad about Hunter's suicide, he wanted nothing more than to die that way.

    Samr,
I love David Sedaris too! He's brilliant. I've got him on audio though, I haven't read him. His voice is perfect for that kind of thing. I've got Dress Your Family and several recordings of him on This American Life and other NPR programs. I've also got The Santaland Diaries which is hilarious. I think I'll download "Live at Carnegie Hall" next. Seriously, if you haven't heard him read his stories, you're missing out.

Actually, it was after Hunter's death (and you're right, he probably wanted to go out like Hemingway). He was on NPR to discuss the life of Thompson and I understood from the interview that he was the inspiration of the Benecio del Toro character in Fear and Loathing. Am I thinking of the wrong guy?

Yeah I think you are mistaken. The last person to speak with Zeta was his son Marco in 1974. He had moved to Mexico and was involved in arms and drug smuggling. He was presumably shot and thrown off of a boat somewhere off the coast of Mexico.

I forget the name of the story, it was in Me Talk Pretty One Day, but it was about how when he was a little kid, he had to take a at a family party thing. It was your typical embarassing story- took a duce, clogged the toilet, didn't want to let anyone know, had to find a solution.

But it was the way he described it. The wording, the explanation, the subtle metaphors. Yeah, I have a ton of stories. , I have at least three involving little kids, diahrea, and my summer job. But I won't waste your time telling them because they are no where near the genius that is David Sedaris.

I don't care if he is gay, or OCD, or has a messed up family (don't we all?), or uses words that are hard to spell like "corduroy." The guy is an absolute, inarguable, fvcking genius.

But don't take my word for it. Read his.
